I made a little bracket to mount to the fender and got a filter that went right onto the MAF.

what year explorer? my MAF doesn't have a provision/flange to mount a filter, it has a flat face.

so i emailed and called the vendor that is selling the 97-01 adaptor and he says it wont fit the 96 explorer MAF even though the measurements on my 96 MAF are the exact same. not sure why...

then i found another ebay listing saying its for the 96-01 that looks the same as the 97-01 only its 1/2" shorter on the one measurement.. so it will be 1/2'" too short based on my MAF measurements. both these vendors had no idea why and what i was talking about.

i am hoping one of you has a 96 MAF and can tell me which of the two you guys have? i dont want to buy this twice and have to deal with shipping back to the US

pic 1. MAF intake Adapter Plate For 96-01 Explorer 5.0L is 3 1/4"
pic 2. MAF intake Adapter Plate For 97-01 Explorer 5.0L is 3 3/4"

you can see the difference , one is 3 1/4" the other is 3 3/4"
thanks

So to answer your question...

my 96 MAF with a 96 casting on it is - a hair over 3 5/8" complete length on the side and the holes are 3" center to center.

And to add... if the holes are 3" center to center and the overall length on that side is only 3 1/4 " it doesent add up to covering just the holes? I think one of those descriptions is wrong.

correct! the 96-01 at 3 1/4" will barley cover the holes and the for 97-01 at 3 3/4" I'm told is not the right one.

do you have one of these on your 96 MAF? if so do you mind having a look/measure to see which of the two you have?

my MAF also has a 96 stamp on it.

cheers

The one I posted eariler in this thread fits, ordered just before Christmas and it showed up today. Fit perfectly. Tossed the Metric bolts and nuts that came with it in my metric bin. Used some 1/4-20 stainless botton heads instead.

I pulled an airbox out of a 2001 Explorer while dumpster diving at the junkyard and repurposed it to be a cold air intake on the passenger side. It did require a battery relocation to the driver side, which was a bit of a PITA.

I’m planning to do this same thing but I may just build a air filter box as I didn’t save the explorer one. Do you mind sharing what intake you used from the air box to the throttle body?

Hi Widowmaker,
I think I got the 3" tube and clamps from Spectre Performance, but I don't recall where I got the silicone 3" 60 deg elbow and 3" adapter at the MAF from. Google'd them and a lot of choices come up at Amazon. I forget the exact size of the MAF and throttle body openings, but I think the 3.25" size that Doug mentions above is correct. Since the '96 did not have the air inlet temp integrated into the MAF yet, had to drill a hole in the pipe and used some high temp silicone to glue it in place. So far, so good! Good luck! B2
