I just bought a complete X, what all should I strip, beside the engine and front dress?

Rear axle. For the disc brake setup, if nothing else.

Transmission. 4R70W. You may not want it, but it's probably worth some money to someone who does.

I sold an Explorer main engine harness & ECU on Ebay for enough that if I had access to another I'd pull it for that reason.

More... a friend of mine got a complete wrecked '96 for the same reason as you. He stripped useable body and interior parts, etc. and sold them on Ebay. Before long he'd made enough to cover his cost of buying the thing, and he kept the rear axle, transmission & complete engine.

So the trans is useable in an EB?

Broncobowsher on this board has one in his Bronco, though I'm not certain that it's out of an Explorer. Advance Adapters sells the parts to mate it to a Dana 20. To use it with EEC-IV you need a separate transmission controller. Broncobowsher uses a Baumanator. He's a good resource for information.

This is a great transmission, as it is set up to work in a truck and has overdrive. It will work in an EB, but as has been mentioned you need some way for the computer to control it. If you plan to use this motor and trans, be sure that you also keep the computer and wiring, and all emissions controls and sensors. o2 sensors, and I believe there is a sensor in the gas tank...

Yea, great trans to run. I'll just add a link to the trans and the controller www.becontrols.com
Use the Advanced adapters Late AOD adaptor, about $10 in parts from the dealer to convert the AOD output shaft into the 4R70W shaft.

But if you have the 4WD/AWD transmission, it is possible to bolt up a standard full size transfer case like a NP205 (with minor clearancing of the adaptor for shifter clearance) or aftermarket transfer case. That will save you money on the adaptor.

Oh, my old, but still valid, tech article is still listed in the tech section. The controller recently went up $25, now $425. I run one on both the Bronco and the Ranger.
