Here we go! First time tearing into a 96 explorer. Wondering if any members can provide some step by step instructions on how to take the Engine and transmission out. Prefer to take the engine/trans out as one unit and without taking any of the serpentine system apart. Can this be done?

Any special method/way on taking out the computer? Don't want to have it lock up on me some how. Not sure if this will happen?

Also the rest of the truck is going to scrap so i can be really generous with the sawzall to get her out.

Also planning on stripping the rear disks brakes as i understand they can be used however i have yet to research that.

Any other parts from this truck that i can use for my build please do let me know.

I appreciate all the Info, pointers in advance

Cheers

Pull the radiator and fan in case you want it. Cut or remove grill and I would think you have plenty of room to get it out. Dont know about the computer stuff.

Cut the grill... 2wd > Drain the trans B4 removing it, so you don't paint the driveway. Unless you have a plug when the driveshaft is removed. Should not be an issue if 4wd model... But that is pretty long.

ECU should be easy to remove, ECU box not so much...

I got my battery impact and a handful of sockets and pulled off the fenders and hood for easier access. I pulled the entire A/C system out in one piece since I didn't have the equipment to reclaim the refrigerant and I didn't want to vent it to the atmosphere. I sawzalled the core support middle section out for clearance since my cherry picker wouldn't go any higher. Basically the whole section there with the warning stickers. I second 904bronco on draining the trans first, I didn't think about it and had quite a puddle to clean up afterwards.

Watch all the grounds from the block to the body, and the O2 sensors and stuff going to the exhaust. I spent a few hours removing and bagging accessory parts and wiring but still ran into ground straps I didn't see in the dark on pull night.

Vacuum up the crap!

I posted the parts on Facebook and was able to sell the wheels, tires, rear hatch, bumper, a door, the rear end, the cats, and then the shell. I got more than my money back.

Hey Papy,
I pulled the '96 Explorer computer bracket that I needed at a boneyard. All I had was a battery powered dremel. socket set and a small crowbar but I was able to "finesse" it out. Main thing is it has a bracket that mounts to the back and will fight you like a fiend, but shouldn't be too bad once you can get to it. You know where to cut the wiring harness and all of that jazz, right?

Do you need info on the engine wiring harness re-work that the EFI Guy does? I made an excel spreadsheet off of his videos to detail what pins to delete and where the ones that are used go to. Might be helpful. Will try to post. Good luck with the build!
Cheers, B2
