1999 5.0 Explorer Swap- Harness?

Well, Here I go again. I recently purchased a 1999 Ford Explorer 5.0 302 for the Bronco. I just removed the inline 6 last week, sandblasted the engine compartment, and gloss blacked it. I also purchased a powder coating system from Eastwood.com and a dedicated oven for the individual parts. EVERYTHING I took out that goes back in will be powdercoated.

Last summer I upgraded to a centech harness, which I love. My guy left the explorer harness intact on the new 5.0 engine. The whole Harness is there and perfect. What I need to know is, How do they meet up? Are there any hints or tips from people that have done this swap? Am I going to have to spend again for some centech made 5.0 to original harness Bull#*^t?

I haven't even gotten the balls up yet to tackle the fuel. I already swapped the injectors to #19's and a new fuel rail. I also had to add a distributor to this engine, since it was distributor"less" from the factory after 6/1999. At least it has the GT40 intake. Score.

What I'm concerned with now is the wiring. Any hints?

Unfortunately the harness won't work, neither will the MAF. I beleive the throttle body can still be used but needs to be modified. Use a mustang computer, distributer, and MAF (70mm). You can modify a mustang harness or use an RJM harness. I also believe the 99's have a returnless fuel rail, these can be modified to be used or go with a 96 or early 97 exploder rail, or mustang rail. I believe 99s have the GT40P heads you need to be carefull when choosing headers. good luck

I'm in the middle of my 96 conversion aswell.

Preparing to Weld in the new engine mounts as we speak. Cutting the oldies off with the plasma torch. I don't understand what the MAF is. Can you tell me?

I got a new fuel rail, distributor and wires from a mustang with the injectors and I need a computer now. A9L, right?

I'm staying away from headers. I don't like em.

MAF is Mass Airflow Meter. It is what tells the computer how much air is entering the engine. They are calibrated and matched to the computer. So taking a MAF off the Explorer engine and using it with the Mustang computer will result in a poorly tuned engine. The air flowing through the meter will cause a voltage to the computer. the computer looks at the programming and sees that specific voltage and knows how much air is engering the engine. throw in a little correction for temp and exhaust O2 and the computer knows how much fuel to squirt in through the injectors (the computer also knows the values of the injectors so those need to match the programming as well). You will need to run mustang sized injectors with the mustang computer instead of the Explorer sized injectors.

If you feel like playing with parts, I hear the Explorer MAF flows better then the mustang one, then I strongly recomend a costume chip or aftermarket tuner like the TwEECker. It allows you to reprogram the computer for the MAF and injectors you feel like playing with. Also lets you tune all kinds of fun things as well.

As for your parts list, I didn't see a mustang harness. That Explorer harness uses a completely different computer system that is not interchangable with the EEC-IV mustang computer.

Double check the sparkplug to manifold clearance before you become too attached to your manifolds. I think you can reuse the stock Explorer manifolds if need be.

Keep the Explorer 65mm throttle body. You will need to splice in the plug from the Explorer harness into the mustang harness for it to work, but it works just fine.

I started doing the same conversion in December. Although my motor was a 5.0 out of an 88 explorer. After expolring my options I did away with the fuel injection. By the time you purcahse all the needed wiring, computer, and sensors, I ended up with a headache and a slim checkbook. I converted my 5.0 to a 4 bbl propane system. 1/3 the price of brand new efi. I did not try to wheel and deal and trade around for a better deal, I was just going off the narket value of the needed items. And I cruise mine off road mainly.

Thanks for the advice, but I have no interest in propane. The cost is intimidating I know, but I was ready for that. I will not pay Market for anything but gaskets.

I can do the tally afterward and let you guys know what it costed me and where I got it all.

Where did you find a complete propane kit for $300?
