With Baja fever lingering, and it looks like no NORRA 500 this fall, a few of us have started kicking around the idea of a run in Baja Norte around the weekend of 10/11/14 that would include staying in or around San Felipe, possibly attending the Pete's Camp Poker Run (Seea vid from last year HERE), heading down as far as we want (hopefully at least Cocoa's Corner), maybe stay on the trail a day or 2, and make some memories!

Let us know your ideas & suggestions, dates that would work, places you'd like to see, things to do you'd like to include, etc. Then around August we can get a head count, email addresses and all that to make plans concrete.

The more the merrier. I'm already in, so that's 1!

I've always wanted to do a Baja trip. It is definately on my list of "must go places". Unfortunatley my travel schedule is all ready full:( And its 1600 miles just to get to the border......

Well, assuming the 500 is a no-go then I'm IN for certain. I dig the idea of San Felipe as Base Camp. There are plenty of rentals around that area. I'm indifferent to where we go once we get there. I like the idea of spending a night on the trail, however. The thought of doing it in Mid - Nov is appealing because I would just stay until Thanksgiving and have the family join, but I'm VERY flexible on dates.

Maybe next time Yeller. All those miles make it tough too.

Hey coach, mid-nov. Is fine with me too. The baja 1000 runs nov. 12-16. San felipe turns into a big party town. We could get in the middle of that or go before or after. Im fine with san felipe as a base camp, i love that town. We can do 1-2 day loops out of there. We could also do the loop san felipe to cocoa's corner, up to ensenada, across through mike's sky ranch (which will most likely be pretty cold by mid-nov and back down to san felipe or head north to USA.

I can draw up a gps map once we have the basic course set so everyone will have it. There's plenty of off roading miles that we can lay down.

I guess we really need to start with when, then how many days. I'll start a poll once there's enough interest.

Hey Buk, Mark up in Chico here. I'm interested too though it's along drive from here. I won't have the Bronco finished by then but my 01 Super Duty adventure rig will be. The Hobie is sitting without a tramp awaiting refinishing the hulls and re rig. I'll see if I get anywhere with that. Can't wait to see San Felipe again!

Hey Mark
I'll be looking forward to seeing you with Hobie in tow. What size Hobie? I used paint with a flex agent on the hulls of a '78 16 I had. They turned out pretty nice. They were orange with yellow tops and I wanted white to race. The Hobie Mid-Winter's West race in S.F. was the best! I'l bring my old trap harnesses and any other parts I have if you think you can use them.

I hope we get at least 5-6 Broncos and an assortment of others. I've got a few friends with various pre-runners that will most likely come.

I'm finally actively looking for a 351 to build for mine, researching on here which year and what donor vehicle is best. I'm having a shop do the motor, so I should be done with everything by the end of August.

I think i'll make a go at doing this, talked to the wife and she said i'll be your translator;D---that's a good sign. The mexican connection you've entertained us here on clbs has my interest going---but i am talking mexico for sure, sounds like alot of fun with new faces and places:)

Hey - just a thought. Apparently, NORRA had a date in mind a few months ago (October 10-12), and posted it in Dirt Sports mag. It is a Mexicali-San Felipe-Ensenada race. That tells me "if" they have the race, these will be the dates. Why don't we plan around those dates and if they have the race, great. If not, great! Either way we get time down in Baja. I had completely forgotten about the B1K when I suggested mid Nov. I'm really interested in what Andrew is thinking, also.

Great idea. That way we'll plan on being there nevertheless. Those dates also coincide with the Pete's Camp Poker Run which is a race for the free beer at each checkpoint!

Buk, my Hobie is 16', 1980 vintage. Used to belong to Hobie Fleet 30, Riverside. Sailed many times in San Felipe and several trips to Catalina out of San Pedro. It's while hulls and blue/white sails. Sort of sad looking right now but I just rebuilt the trailer and plan to do the boat this summer. Hull bottoms pretty beat from beaching, I think I'll use some graphite infused epoxy for the repair. PPG Concept white with a Bahama Blue stripe. Sails pretty worn but they work ok. We used to camp at a place north of the light house, don't recall the name. Lift the boats over the sea wall, across the sand and into the water. Best time sailing solo with another Hobie across the Bay at night flying a hull in formation. Doesn't get much better. Had a '78 Hobie that wrecked on the rocks of the shrimp harbor in a storm. Local fishermen saved our sorry asses.

Hey Just saw this as I was out in Wisconsin for the last few weeks. I gotta really look at my calendar and figure this out. I must get a 66 roadster and a 71 Baja finished, but they are getting close. I'll do some conversing with my family and clients and get back on here.

Always wanted to take the Bronco to Mex! Would love to so some surfing and kayak fishing down there too!

You at all concerned about bronco theft? I'm sure traveling in a group helps. Preventative measures?

How may mailes are you talking about?

Kayak fishing yes, but there's no surf on the Sea of Cortez side where we're going.

As far as theft, I've gone there dozens of times over the last 35 years and never had any theft personally, but that's not to say there isn't any. In the camp ground where we stay, there's mobile homes with year round residences. We used to know a lot of them but many have passed on over the years. No one messes with your stuff there. Just keep tabs on your stuff and keep it secure when you're not around. Like anywhere in the states or anywhere else, where there's people there's always that small percentage will be idiots. It always good to travel in groups as well, which we would hopefully be.

San Felipe is about 125 miles south of the border at Calexico/Mexicali, which is about 225 miles from LA

IT'S GETTING CLOSER!

It still looks like I'll be 95% good to go, so I've been planning with a couple of people locally who have gone down before with me.

Is anyone interested in staying in a hotel in San Felipe as opposed to camping? If we did, I could book rooms at the Las Palmas, which is gated and has a guard. I usually stay there chasing for the Baja 500 & 1000. 2 or 3 years ago I was a couple of rooms down from Jesse James when he crashed early in the 1000, before he broke up with Sandra (man was that a mistake!) who I heard was there shortly but I never saw her.

We could stay 2 nights there, then take off and do a loop down thru Cocoa's Corner, spend a night on the trail, then head up to Ensenada and stay a night there then back up to the states. With this plan we would be looking at going into Mexico Friday morning, October 10 (maybe meet near Salton Sea a day early Thursday or Friday), Fr & Sat night in San Felipe, Sun night on the trail, Mon night in Ensenada and back in the US Tues. It's a short and pretty simple trip. It would also mean driving the Bronco's down and back unless you bring a chase vehicle. Thoughts? Likes? Dislikes?

Sounds awesome but as it turns out my inlaws/partial daycare are gone leaving oct 12, so likely won't work for me as I'll need to be here....I think. Will discuss some more.

Decided to use the downtime for some serious racer mods, including a new cage and fuel cell. So my wife and I are going down to Cabo, Todos Santos and La Paz for a few weeks as part of a language immersion program. Any excuse to head to Baja! Lol
