I would want lower gears for sure. What are you wanting to do with it?

I can already smell the burnt clutch.
What are you doing with 3.50 gears and a stock 6-cylinder? Stock gears should be 4.11 and optional 4.56

It originally had 411's but i swapped out the stock Dana 33 for a dana 44 with disc and the original rearend with 411 gears were toast so i swapped them out .
Whats the biggest tire i could get away with .

I had the original 170 in my 70 with the 4.11's and stock tires and had little power to spare. I'm looking to move up in tire size now that I have a 5.0L, but I wouldn't expect squat outta my old setup with 33's. (and that's still talkin 4.11's)

I've got a lot of info on the 96 Exploder swap, if you're interested. ;-)

Best of luck with the work. Cedar Park is nice. There's a "Bronco" car wash about 10 miles West of you in Lago Vista. (my Dad lives there) Corner of First and Bronco, of course!

Cheers, B2

Those are some cool pics of the bronco and car wash .

The only reason i was thinking about 33's is that i also have a 72 bronco that i'm fixing to sell and i thought i would keep the 33's on it for my 66 bronco being there like brand new and my 66 needs tires .
Thanks
Robert

Doesn't the 6cyl 3-speed have taller gearing than the 8cyl 3-speed (RAT vs RAN)? That would make it ever worse with larger tires.

Keep the 170 6 banger. Find a carb from a 200 sixer and install it. Go 456 for gears and you will be able to handle most any situation.

That. There was a very good reason the truck came with 4.11s to start with....;)

My '69 daily driver did OK with the stock 4.11s and 35s, but the 170 was replaced by a '78 250 I-6.

If you already have the wheels/tires I'd swap them on and take it for a drive. As others have said... find a hill and see if you can get over it at a reasonable speed.

33's will look better. :)

170 six

Don't know if this will help you but for performance info on the six go to fordsix.com they are the experts. Good luck.

Not very many big hills in my area so i would probably be ok. if worse came to worse i could always swap out the gears to 411's again . I just think its worth keeping the new wheels and tires for my 66 and not let them go on the 72 i plan on selling . ;D
