3g alternator wiring question

What do I do with the old charge wire? I have one that is black/orange or black/red and the other is black/yellow. Do I cap both of them or does one need power supplied to it? I think from what I can see in the wiring diagrams is that one is capped and the other needs power supplied from the hot side of the solenoid. Does that sound right?

I have the rest wired up and ready, just trying to figure out what to do with these two larger gauge wires.

If I remember correctly, the black w/ yellow goes to a 12v terminal with a fusible link, the other end Black with whatever stripe, is capped.

Don't take my word for that, make sure it makes sense.

I know that the large gauge wire is the charging loop, and your dealing with both ends of it, only one end needs to be connected to 12v and the other is capped.

That's exactly what I am trying to figure out. I think you are correct in that the black with yellow stripe is the wire going to a 12v source and the other is capped.


Thanks for the diagram Chuzie, I got the actual alternator wired up correctly I do believe. Just trying to figure out the other end that I believe supplies power to the dash??

The Black w/Red and Black w/Yellow wires create a loop that starts at the solenoid (Black w/Red) with a fusable link, through the ammeter, then inside the Bronco to power everything (Black w/Yellow), and finally back out into the engine compartment to the alternator.

You need the Black w/Red wire connected to the battery somehow, and it needs to be protected, either by a fuseable link or circuit breaker. This is what powers the entire Bronco.

If it's not convenient to do anything else, then just cap off the Black w/Yellow wire.

When I bought my Bronco, the fuseable link had already been replace with a circuit breaker (cheap 30 amp like you can get at Autozone..). One side connected to the BAT+ side of the solenoid. The other was connected to the Black w/Red wire. I connected the loose Black w/Yellow wire to the same connection as the Black w/Red wire. That way, I had both ends of that loop connected to power.

I like that idea, seems like it would help carry extra current also.

10-4 on that. I have two good fuseable links in my wiring parts so I will grab then and just hook both ends up and that way I don't have to worry about having a hot wire under the hood capped off. Thanks for the feedback guys!

I'm going to borrow this thread if ya'll don't mind, it is related;D

Just put a 200A 3g on mine but it won't charge. I was reading the box and it says the battery has to have a minimum of 12.6v, my truck has been sitting for several months and I can't get the charger to get it above 12.7 (could be the charger), problem being after I turn it over it drops to 12.4. I don't recall having this issue with the 130A 3g I replaced when I went to a serpentine belt.

Question is; Do these hi amp. alts. have to have that much more than the lower ones?
