Looking for a 4r70w from a 4wd to make it easier to convert. Which vehicles donors will work? I know the 96-01 Explorers will work but what about F150's with the 4.6 and expeditions??? Having trouble finding a 4wd explorer donor down here in the south. Lots of F150's, will they work??

Anything from behind a 4.6 or 5.4 wont work. Those are the modular motor family and the 289/302/351 are the Windsor engine family. Different bell housing bolt pattern.

The ones from anything with a 4.6 or 5.4 will not work, those engines have a different bellhousing bolt pattern than the SBF.
The same with the 4.0 V6 from the Explorers.

One from a 4.2 V6 would fit, those have the same bellhousing bolt pattern.

I have a 2wd 4r70w, from what i understand they are a lot harder and more expensive to put the D20 adapter on and that's the reason I am looking for a 4wd. Am I over reacting, how much more trouble is it to convert the 2wd vs the 4wd???

I actually have two of them with the 5.0 that i bought from the salvage auction, one only has 71k on it. Just looking at the cost difference and trouble to convert the 2wd vs the 4wd version.

4x4 one you do not have to go into to use it.

2x4 one you do to change output shaft... I have done this twice now, it works fine.
One was $850 to convert, the other was $1800. It was free and had a host of internal problems... I was already in it, and I ended up going all the way. :(

Converting a 2wd 4R70W to use with a D20 is maybe $200 to $300 more than converting an AWD 4R70W to use with a D20, pretty reasonable if you already have the 2wd transmission.

Can you find a 4R70W for $200 to $300 that is in good enough condition?

Another question about the 4r70w. I am currently running c4 with 4:11 on 33" tires. Doing 60 mph I am turning 2500 rpm. How would I figure out my rpm in OD with the 4r70w?
