I am looking at a 2000 Explorer with a 4R70W. I don't remember if the guy at the yard said it was a 4WD or AWD. I have heard that it will bolt up to the 4x4 version. My question is can a NP205 bolt right up to either one? Does the 4WD add AWD have the same extension housings and bolt patterns? Same tail shaft and spline count?

Not sure if anyone has any experience with the AWD's.

4x4 Explorer is the same as an AWD Explorer, there is no difference. They are one in the same, just different names. I'm not sure about the trannies, but I know that 95 and later 4x4 Explorers have the Auto 4x4 which some people refer to as "AWD".

The 5 liter will be only AWD, no low range or "auto 4x4" like the V6's. Its the same output as the 97-up F150 4R70W. In other words, anything that will bolt up to the back of a 4.6 liter 4x4 truck will also bolt up to the AWD Explorer's 4R70W.

so the extension housing will definitely have the large round 6 bolt pattern and the shaft will be the correct length and spline count for the NP205???
