Although it has been reliable and has performed well, it's time to replace the old leaking C4. It has always shifted really hard and quick. Plan is to install a 4R70W to gain some better road characteristics while not losing off road abilities.

First step is to locate a good source for the transmission. Living in south east Texas now so hoping someone local to this area has some recommendations for a transmission at a good price.

Suggestions?

You can find them on Craigslist auto parts Explorer/Mountaineer. There is also a video on YouTube on rebuilding them. Supposedly these are one of the simpler auto trans to rebuild?

I just rebuilt mine and am working on getting it installed. I got this one from a junkyard for $79. Look into transmissionbench.com for a really nice overhaul kit and they send you a thumb drive with LOTS of detailed video. It's even on YouTube. Look up 4r70w transmission rebuild. You can do it! I didn't get my kit from them, but there are parts that really need to be checked and their biggest kit comes with them.

Best to look for one from a 1998 and up Explorer/Mountaineer.

While you can add the stronger parts to an earlier transmission it will cost much more than buying the later transmission.

Thanks

Thanks for the responses.

Will the 98 and up Explorer 4R70W have the correct output shaft and splines?

Depends on the plans for your transfer case. I used a 4r70w from a 99 mountaineer (same thing as the 98 explorer) and had to change out the output shaft and use a new adapter to make it work with my dana 20.

I thought that is what I remembered from reading some other posts somewhere, but I thought I read somewhere recently that the new AA adapter kit didn't require changing the output shaft of the tranny. Anyone know if that is true?

I'm going to keep my D20 with 3.15:1 for now.

Thanks for the info. How far are you from Orange, TX?

I got a low mileage 96 for 250 on craigslist. Patience works. Or buy a whole explorer, take the motor out, tranny out and the rear end then scrap it;)
