Ok so I understand I need a Ford F150 4x4 box and I also understand an 80's 2x4 box. What I dont know is the year ranges and if f250 boxs will work. Any info will be awsome.

If you cant find the 4x4 box (harder of the two to find) buy a rebuilt one. Got mine from autozone for $200 after searching 10 yards for it. You can use the old box or the 4x2 box for the core.

be sure to take all the hoses at the yard.

they are really cracking down on the wrong core plus it really hurts the rebuilder. they will eventually just r&r them if they don't get the correct core back. just to put it into perspective i sell about 10000 d9 reverse gears(4x2 gear) each year and about 20 4x4 gears (that is all i get in a year).
