5 1/2 inch suspension lift too much for drive shaft?

I have a '67 with a 5 1/2 inch suspension lift I bought a while back without the front drive shaft installed. When I went to install it I found that the shaft does not have enough play to accomidate the lift. With the front U-joint bolted up to the front axle the mating surface at the transfer case is only about 3 mm max from bolting up. Should I rotate the front axle? Any other suggestions?

Either rotate the axle, get a Tom Woods offset u-joint or get a high pinion front axle.

A 'good' driveline shop can work the CV a little and make it usable. There are other driveshaft options as well...but they get $$ quickly. Rotating the knuckles is one option...there are a few threads here on doing it.

Tried dealing with HAD and ended up getting the service I needed at Tom Woods.

Taking the first things first approach if it's the stock 1967 front shaft (Borg Warner style) it's not going to work at all or even be close.
http://www.wildhorses4x4.com/category/Driveshafts this will help you identify the style. The Spicer 1310 (stock) style will usually work with varying degrees of success and failure. With a little messaging of the CV and tcase yokes they can run in many rigs. We like the Tom Woods offset u-joint at the front end. Personally I've always tried to keep the drive shaft as the weak link in the drivetrain by sticking with the 1310 stuff.

I like your idea Jim - I've got 1 tons, cut 37" boggers, atlas 3.8, building a healthy 351 and drive with a heavy foot and I'm sticking with 1310's for that very same reason. Drive shaft u joints are an easy fix on the trail compared to a smoked front end or gear set.

I do have an aftermarket shaft from wild horses that is the spicer type. Thanks for all the help. I've got some good leads to pursue now. How do the Tom Woods super joints work at high speed?
