67 Wheel Hub Caps installation

Hi Guys, So a few weeks ago I took off my wheel hub cap centers to paint them and now Im re-installing them and unsure if Im putting them on right as they dont seem to go all the way in, when i push the cap theres some spring in it. Here are a couple of pics

So you’re saying that after you’ve installed it, and the final screws are tight, there is still some in and out movement?
Did the O-ring seal go back on?
While I am sure that they’re not really supposed to do that, it’s unfortunately, very common for them to do exactly that.
Just how much movement are we talking about?

And finally, do they actually lock and unlock?

And one more thing.
After cleaning all the inner workings of the knob, did you apply a light coat of grease to every surface?
If not rust might be in your future.

You’re not supposed to pack it with grease, of course, but a light coating of something to keep moisture from having its way with the metal is a good thing.
Also keeps the dissimilar metals from reacting on each other.
