'74 rear axle code

So my new '74 has an axle code of 04..... I can't find information on what I have for a '74' but I am sure it is 4:57 like indicated for '66-'72 seeing as it is geared low and has a 200 six cylinder. I mean it is geared really low.

Any help is appreciated in clarifying this!

Did this code come from the glove box tag or the rearend tag? If I remember right, the gear set will be listed on the second line of the rearend tag.

Gear ratio is stamped into the tag on the rearend, if it has a locker or tracloc, it'll have an "L" in the middle of the numbers (4L57)

4.56 gears, open diff and 2780 lb (small bearing) axle. If it was limited slip the code would be A4.

I don't think '74-'75 had small bearing axles.

There was the "Torino" ends axle, with big bearing - small brakes, and the regular big bearing - big brakes (3300 lb) axle.

Interesting thought. Small bearing axle could have went away after '73.

Supposedly according to some of the info out there the small bearing axle was around from 66-75. Lots of people have issues with the 74/75 axles because they are not sure what they have. So you should verify before ordering anything.
