Well,I'm almost ready to order my new engine.I'm leaning towards the Ford 250 h.p. crate 351,because of price.I was also thinking of the T&L 347 stroker.A local mechanic told me that strokers have problems at high altitude!!!???I have never heard that one before.Does anyone have input for a crate engine source.Or 351 vs 302 opinion.

All engines have problems at higher altitudes. There are things that you can do to help alleviate it, but the bottom line is that engines just don't breathe as well when the air is thin.

As far as 351 vs. 302. Go with the 351 - no contest. There is no replacement for displacement.

Yes go 351. Even after getting a new dist, oil pan etc. it will be cheaper than the 347 and perform better overall and will be a good platform for future mods.

I have that ford crate engine. Amazing deal for the price. Big hint though. It is a roller block with a non-roller cam. The roller lifters, pushrods, and roller cam retainer are cheap and then put in a rollwer cam. My entire conversion to roller cam was under $300.00 and I will get about 25 more horses and a lot more reliability for the money. Use a stock HO mustang cam in the 351W crate engine and you will generate excellent low end torque and sustain good horsepower. It's a win -win!

hay Cali77 glad that worked out for you. I also think this engine is a good choice.

I have been making them run in the thin air for a long time, but this mechanic says that the bore and stroke of a stroker, displacement, creates further problems at altitude.I don't believe this ,I was wondering if anyone could confirm that as truth?I'm still open to options of a crate motor ,with high performance heads, but can't find one for off road applications, except if they are over 7-8 thousand.

Thats probably the way I'll go.I noticed that "roller" cam ready thing, but figured before I shorten the life of a "brand new" engine by messing with it,I'll run it the way it came.I don't agree with Ford that they don't have a market for a Truck motor with the GT-40 heads,I think they are nuts.(I guess its related to them ,missing what made thier own Bronco great, and building that new piece of crap!)They make a 351,GT-40 head, roller motor, but only for high RPM applications.Go figure, thats the one I'd buy.But I dont want to buy a new motor, and start tearing into it.
