Alright, this was bad times.
I was doin a little offroading tonight, nothing hard, just some dirt roads and small hills, a little mud hole. Everything was goin fine and i did the path about 3 times when a cloud of smoke (a small cloud) billows out from under my dash. The bronco dies but the stero stays on. i open the hood, more smoke, it clears and nothing LOOKS wrong. i check my fluids, and transmission heat but didn't know where to go from there. a friends dad somes and we find out the batterie has power, but the 12 volt thing by the air filter isnm;'t getting any power. So i try starting it and when i turn the key all the was over the engine starts up and runs, but as soon as i let it spring back to the "run" position, it dies again. Once adain with the key OUT, the stero stays on (not suppose to happen) so we fiddle with more stuff, and start it, it turns over and starts fine, i drive it like, 2 inches (literally) and it dies. So we figure it's a problem with the 12 volt thing. We run a wire from the batterie directly to the volt thing and it starts up and runs fine. I get back to the house and turn the key off and take it out. but the car dosent stop, it keeps running (while the keys are in my hand). so i go out, clip the wire from the batterie to the volt thing and it dies. but the stero is still on, so i have to disconnect the batterie.
Whats wrong with my bronco! ignition problems? i really wanna get it fixed and i wish i could like, give it to one of u experts for a month and let you drive it, on and off road. and try to fix all the KINKS.
thanx alot,
tyler

My bet is the resistor wire to the "12 volt thing" - coil - has burned through and shorted to the acc feed wire. This would keep the radio on but not allow power to the coil.
Check the wiring, starting at the key switch in the dash for burned wires. Good Luck

my guess also. you fried the resistor wire. Good luck finding another one. you will have to look under the dash at the back of the ign switch, you will see a burnt wire,(prob the one next to it also) the resistor wire is red...or was;) and chances are where it travels through the firewall, inside the engine compartment is smoked too. fix your wires or run new ones (better) and get a ballast resistor from napa or someplace 1.3-1.4 ohm . Put the ballast inline the wire to the coil and fasten to somewhere metal, they get really hot. also get a new coil. It wont cost much to fix, just a pain messin with wires.

been there...........

I agree with the earlier posts. Had the same problem once, turned out I fried my resistor wire. I ran a new wire and the problem was fixed. A ballast resistor is a good idea since a replacement wire will be sending a full 12V and you need to drop it down to 9V. The new wire will run to the ballast resistor and then the ballast resistor to the coil.

The resistor wire is only $6 at Checkerschuckskragen. When they look it up it will show "resistor coil". Even though it is a wire. Toss that coil too!!!!. I have a spare because when mine went out, I was way up in nowhere.
