I hate to start another ps thread, but, here goes. I have installed a 1994 5.0 ho motor in my 74. It drives horrable!! I had the front lined up all is good there. The problem is it darts and is twitchy also when you turn it you have to pull it back the other way( if that makes any sence). I was wondering if the ps pump witch is for a tbird with rack&pionion is causing problem with the old 74 steering box. We have also checked the steering box adj.It seems to be fine. My front end man thinks the steering box is bad.I am trying to eliminate other problems before I jump into finding a steering box.

THANKS

I am trying to analyze my own wandering front end..

However not returning to center is an alignment issue.

It was a booger to line up. I used truck knuckles had to order adjustable upper ball joint bushings I also had to shim the left spindle to get the cam&caster right. I dont really know what to do. I hate to just keep throwing money at it.

It sounds like your caster, Did the front end guy tell you what he caster was? It needs to be around 4deg.

My bronco drove exactly what you are describing. I just changed the C-bushings this past weekend and put the 7deg. ones in. Drives and steers like a champ now. It even returns to center now.

He did not tell me what the cam or cas was,but I can find out. Mine has got new C bushings. They are 2deg that is what I was told this is what it needed for a bronco with no lift.

Something else I noticed the power steering fluid is black. It had no fluid in it when we got it. Also the bronco had been sitting for 14 years .Could something be stuck in the gear box?

Just went through the same thing with a friends stock suspension height Bronco with a 1" body lift. We changed the c bushings from 2* to 7*. It still would not return to center. He took it to a shop for alignment check afterward to see if that would help. The alignment was right on.

The front end shop removed the pit arm from the steering box and found the following:

1. One ball joint was too tight, readjusted.
2. The steering box was set up too tight, readjusted
3. There was and still is a bind in the steering shaft caused by the body lift.

It now returns to center and he is happy.

Black fluid is not a good sign. Flush it all out as best you can hopefully all the seals in the steering box are still good Might be a good idea to get a seal kit and go through it as you might have a bad seal.
Even a stock height bronco can benefit form 4 or 7 degreee bushings when you have power steering.

If you are the guy that I talked to today you have the ball joint too tight. You may need to replace the C bushings but hold off on that until you have the problem fixed.
