Anyone have a part number for a decent mechanical fuel pump?

Howdy Everyone!
I have been having nothing but problems with mechanical fuel pumps.I have put 7500 miles on the Bronco since I got it on the road. I have a basically stock 302 ( 1989 5.0) that I converted to carb. The first fuel pump I got lasted about 6 months. I got a replacement, which was not the same. I guess the newer model replaces the older units, I do not have a part number unfortunately. The older model has a larger housing and bigger diaphragm, it worked great until it started shooting oil out the weep hole at high rpms. The second one which has the smaller diaphragm would not keep up with the engine demand, not sure why.
I found an new one that was the old style and it worked for about 2 months now. It is starting to shoot oil out the weep hole like the first one did.
I hope all that mess makes sense. Anyways does anyone have a part number for a fuel pump that has worked well? I know in todays age with all the chinese parts that it is hard to find anything that lasts, just hoping someone has a silver bullet for my problem. I did get these from my local Carquest, I have had good luck in the past with their products. I am open to trying anything at this point.

As always, Thanks in advance!

Maybe pcv clogged causing pressure in crank case?

Sorry, but for those very same reasons I switch to electric ones a while back.

Crap is pretty much what we get today for parts. I helped a local buddy put an Edelbrock electric fuel pump (to replace the one that quit) on his '49 and the first trip out of town to a car show it quit pumping. No, the filter and pump weren't clogged. New pump works great... but like the original poster said- for how long?

Disappointing to say the least.

I doubt that professional garages would put up with come-backs like that.
Find out where they get their parts in your area.

It's a valid point. But I wonder just how many shops are regularly working on anything with a mechanical pump anymore? Forty years and more of OE electric pumps and there are not likely many shops still working on older vehicles with any regularity. Many are getting turned away I bet.
And those that do may be throwing up their hands too, and recommending electric pumps as well. Or just going to the dealer and hoping for the best.

Be interesting to find out. I'll ask around but in recent years (last time I checked anyway) Airtex was probably the most common one at the local warehouses.
I might stop by FastUndercar later to see what is on their shelves these days.
(or rather check their website!) A quick glance at their homepage looks like Airtex and Delphi are their main offerings. So no different than what we're finding elsewhere already.

We sell Mr Gasket, Holley and Edelbrock mechanical pumps, but I have zero feedback on them directly. Unless some of the problems with those brands and members here have been from us perhaps?
Have not heard, so can't comment with any accuracy.

Sounding like pretty soon we'll be putting fuel pumps right up there with starter relays in the reliability (or lack thereof) department.
If they're not there already that is.

So far I've had good luck with Airtex and I have tried others Carter and Mr Gasket, Carter lasted a week and Mr gasket 2 months. I have not tried Holley or Edlebrock, but my nephew has used Holley and Edlebrock on his Chevys with good luck.

I use Airtex from autozone its now 2 years old and still kicking. had a long term relationship with carter until I had 2 fail in 2 years. the check valves inside, the o-rings swelled on California gas and wouldn't pump anymore. so Carters out Airtex in. I use to get 10 years on the old Carter pumps. Now they are junk. Carter probably now invests in tow trucks.

OK Paul and OP I'll chime in!
Been running the Edelbrock 1725 (same as WH sells) since 2014 with no issues after multiple Carter pump fails so pretty happy with that!

Price on the other hand? Not so happy BUT I haven't had to touch the Edelbrock so that's just how it goes sometimes.

That won't work unless you buy OE parts like Motorcraft or AC/Delco as examples.

My best friends shop tried 5 different wtrpumps on Duramax engines over the summer (3 yrs ago).

After the 4th call back he went AC/Delco on all the others and not one issue. Napa, O'Reilly's, AutoZone all failed within 5-8k miles.

What I'm saying is the problem is with ALL aftermarket parts and brands (almost) unless they are OE.

Heck, Honorio just put in new roller Comp Cam lifters on a new engine and had one die, I've had the same issue.

Worthless crap being pawned off on us.

I have a Holley clockable in my 69 EB for 11 years. So far so good. I can look for the part number if desired. I also use the Holley mechanical pump in my 67 Grand Prix with the same success.

Sorry it took me so long to get back on, life getting in the way again. I appreciate all the replies! I will check out all the suggestions and see what is available , parts of any kind are getting hard to come by. I will post up what I find and end up using. Hopefully I can get some life out of my new pump when I get it.

Thanks again, I really appreciate all the Folks here on the forum!
Have a good one!

I don't have any experience with the fuel pump squirting oil, but I'll give my "fuel pump" fiasco... I had a '73 that years ago I kept having fuel supply issues with. Changed the fuel pump 3 times, put a new rear tank in, still the problem persisted. Changed the manual tank selector, same thing, no fuel. Changed all the rubber lines, nothing. Bought another fuel pump, and in the course of putting it on, noticed some movement in the solid line. Gave it a tug and 3 inches of it broke off! All I can assume is that after the PO put headers on it, it baked the line because it was all brittle back to where it exited the engine compartment. Replaced all the line and no problems afterward.

In Tucson we have a huge population of '50s-'80s trucks on the road and 1 real parts store ie one that's not a chain store. So far AirTex seems to be the favorite. Many years of replacing mechanical pumps made Carter my choice. Most OE pumps were Carters too. Now I believe they're made by ChiComs and quality is gone. The seal on the arm goes first letting oil mist spray out of the weep hole. It has nothing to do with crank case pressure. I keep hoping some US company will start bringing manufacturing home.

well reserecting this thread. yesterday my Airtex pump failed its close to 3 years old with little actual miles on it. so Carter and Airtex are out. so today I ordered a Carter P4070 rotary pump Assy and a fuel pump cover plate. I also ordered a ford fuel pump rollover switch Assy. hoping to stave off these problems as I am getting to the point of not trusting the Bronco any more. Same as all other failures T Batter uphe check valves are stuck not letting the pump prime. and pump. The main diaphragm has not failed. same failure as the carters. System has fresh fuel but no worky. last time it started and ran was a week and a half ago. well see how it goes. Next Batter up!
