Anyone paint over bedliner?

I'm looking to apply (roll-on) bedliner to the interior of my tub. I would like to then paint over it to match the color of the outside (grabber blue).

I see that there are certain do it yourself bedliners such as duplicolor that are paintable. My question are:

1. Is there one brand that might be better holding the paint?
2. Do I need to add anything special to the paint and clearcoat to make it hold better? More or less reducer, or more or less hardener?

Anyone have any pics of theirs?

Thanks!!

I'm looking to use Duraback. They have them with 17 different colors and also they have in rough or smooth finish, and UV protection. Chances are you find the color you want there and save time mixing colors by yourself. Check http://www.nonslipcoating.com/. My $0.02.:D

If you go do it yourself, use a good colored product.

The professionally hot sprayed poly urea can be topcoated within like 12 hours and it kinda soaks in the color.

most of the home system have a Tintable product. Which means you add the color of your choice to the liner and spray.. They will have some guidelines on type of paints.

I has a bronco professionally sprayed and I went to the auto paint store and purchased the color of my choice and they simply added to the liner mixture. This way the color is all the way through the liner..

That is how I would do it if I were you. You use any paint system that does NOT have the binder mixed in the base coat. I'm not sure if you can use a waterbourne product or not but I would guess it has to be solvent since the bedliner is solvent based. PPG and Sherwin Williams are two examples of paint systems that the mixer of the paint adds the binder to the formula.

I just sprayed mine inside last weekend with tintable Raptor liner. Was pretty easy though it turned out a little lighter than expected. I would guess that you would get a much more uniform finish with the spray on Raptor than the roll on. Cost is about $125 for Raptor liner plus cost of paint to tint it with.

kent wash.
Can it be painted over? I think that's a good question, mine is already applied but wasn't covered when the paint was color sanded and I can't clean it with anything I've tried, so painting or carpet is my only option.

I painted over my Speed-Liner years ago with Sherwin Williams just all purpose enamel. Kicker is getting it really clean. I used a brush and one of the small rollers with a deep nap. Never had an issue with mine peeling but I did clean the hell out of it prior to painting. I would bet that Fusion paint if properly prepped would stick. The reason I went with the brush/roller method is not getting all the overspray all over the truck and the manual method gets it a little thicker coating.

Yes most Berliners can be painted over. I did the fenders, running boards and top of a old land cruiser about 3 years ago and it lives outside 24/7 365 and it has held up perfect. It was sprayed with a single stage paint after bedliner. ive done others that were base clear applications as well. equally as durabe. One trick in addition to cleaning is a good adhesion promoter - you can get it at virtually any auto parts supply that has some paint products for sale.

That looks really nice! Did you have the paint store mix the paint with the binder? Did you put a clearcoat over it or was it single stage?

Why not just leave out the bed liner and paint the body? The paint will stick better and look nicer.

I've gone back and forth about it but my brother has a jeep that the tub is painted gloss black and while it looks great it is really slick especially when it gets wet. I'm gonna have kids climbing in and out and I think the bedliner will help with traction.

Ok after quite a bit of research and advice from you guys I think I'm gonna go with the raptor liner. I'm going to get the tint able kit and spray it on.

Does anyone know how much basecoat to add to the kit? I'm just going to spray the tub. I also assume that you don't add the reducer to the paint correct?

I would honestly follow allenfahey's advice-- if he said to do 15 jumping jacks and eat a can of oysters prior to painting something I would do it ! Allen's advice is legit :)

Look at the Raptor directions and it gives you the mixing ratios. I believe it is 2oz of tint per bottle of Raptor but you need to confirm. Also, when you purchase the Raptor it comes in 4 bottles. The Upol rep suggested that you dump all four bottles into a mixing bucket and tint them all at once to get a consistent color. Then pour the tinted liner back into the bottles and add the reducer and spray.

As far as the tint, see Alan's comment. You want to use the base tint with no binder.

Finally, per my previous post, mine came out a little lighter than expected. The Raptor base is white and I mixed it with Candy Apple Red tint. I may end up spraying a top coat over it if needed. That is ok as long as you use a urethane top coat.

I put the Durabak on mine and don't like it at all. I ordered it tan and it's a little too yellow. It's more of a marine product and has a rubber feel to it, scuffs and shows dirt from shoes & stuff something terrible. Overall not something I would ever do again. I put Raptor Liner on my hard top. LOVE IT! Wish I would have done the bed in the Raptor.

I've never sprayed the tintable Raptor before but most here say it is a bit lighter than their body color. Ask the store to mix their darkest variant or tint it a tad darker. Ask for the manger or their tech guy if he's in. They will likely be your best guys in the paint store to mix your color, especially if they need to tint it. They also have to make 100% sure they don't add the binder or balancer in the formula. Their computer will list it first thing in the formula and I can see the flunky looking at the screen just go ahead and add it.

Good advise a74Ranger has about mixing the tint into the Raptor prior to adding the hardener. (no reducer in Raptor) Ask the paint store for a gallon mixing tub when you buy the liner.
