I replaced all my rear bearings and seals on my 77 9" rear end about 6 months ago. Had to pull the axles recently for a regear and pinched the rubber lip seal on the set 20. The seal on the axle itself is fine but the outer seal that seals the outer portion of the bearing got pinched on reinstallation and is now leaking. Has anyone had success with using the Hylomar Blue sealant (read that i works good for this) on the lip seal. I am trying to avoid having to remove the retainer and bearing to replace the seal being that they are only 6 months old.

77 here and using set 20s with hylomar M. no leaks. my axle flange was pretty mangled too. looked like someone had at one time attempted to press in a bearing misaligned.

Yes. In fact, I give all the credit to Hylomar blue for keeping my SET20 bearings from leaking for the past 20-25 years! My brand new Currie rear axle setup leaked on one side back in '02-'03 when I installed it. Thanks to a tip from @ntsqd, I started using it and have used it ever since.

Have you used Hylomar before? If not then be golly gosh darned careful with it. It is inert and not dangerous, but if you get it into clothes you like it might be gone after the 30th-odd washing. Maybe. It laughs at most solvents and is unaffected by them. I think it's acetone that will slowly dissolve it.

I used it for the first time this year when rebuilding my front and rear ends, definitely won’t go back to dry installing seals, gives me way more confidence in the seal.

This is what I’m dealing with. A section of the lip seal is actually missing. Wonder if the Hylamar would work magic on this or if I should just replace the seal.
