AOD Electronic Pressure Gauge?

I'm looking to get an electronic pressure gauge for my AOD to mount inside the cab, but I can't find one that has readable pressure readings in the lower side, i.e. 0-5 psi. I just don't want to plumb a hydraulic line into the cab so I'm gonna set my initial pressure with a regular pressure gauge (3 foot length), but would like to keep tabs on it as I'm driving down the road with an electronic version. Hopefully someone will chime in with an affordable gauge package...;D

I too, being paranoid of pressure, placed an actual pressure gauge from the trans to beneah the dash. I ran the line via teh t-case shifter area. I have a modified valve body so I run a slightly higher idle pressure than a stock AOD. I am glad I did it.

Checkout ISSPRO guages. I have an electronic fuel pressure guage for my EFI which is very good quality.

I have the ISSPRO catalog (flyer) in front of me. They list a 0-180 PSI trans pressure gauge. Probably others as well.
Very nice gauges but not sealed. I have been told to keep them living a happy life put a little RTV where the wires plug in to keep the dust out of the gears.
Running ISSPRO trans and axle temp gauges on the tow rig. Very nice stuff at the price of the junk aftermarket name brand stuff.

I looked at the ISSPRO catalog and they seem very nice, but on the higher pressure gauges, it doesn't display the lower numbers I need for idle pressure. Now I'm thinking of a digital gauge to get the lower PSI to display.

Bronco Italinio: What pressure gauge did you use to get the lower idle pressure numbers?

I have had that gauge for over 20 years (knowing I would use it for something.lol).

- It is a 0-80 psi Ashcroft.

-I put the 3m film over the bezel to protect it.

-I have a brass tee and I would get my idle setting with a 0-10 psi gauge then plug the tee.

-My valve body was reworked so it runs a higher idle pressure than stock.

-Hope this helps

After debating the issues, for $29, I got the Harbor Freight oil pressure kit to test my AOD. I had the transmission rebuilt 6 years ago with all the mods, i.e., 2 inch band, red (forgot which brand) clutches, shift kit, etc. At idle, with transmission warmed up, pressure reads 32 psi in neutral, but that seems high to me compared with the 0-3 psi everyone is supposedly shooting for, but it has always shifted firm, but not too hard.

A little background: The only reason I'm doing all of this is that I pulled the motor out for a gasket change (oil pan, intake, etc.) and put the motor back in. The current TV cable and bracket is something bastardized from a Ford, but not for sure. Being not sure, I was looking into the Lokar cable setup and read mixed reviews. Should I go with the Lokar or keep current setup since it seems to work well?

So, I guess I need to understand...Why the concern about having a pressure gauge on full time? If your pressure is set correctly at 33 psi, Why worry?

I've been using AOD's in the hot rod world for 20 years and never had a failure. I checked once a year and never had more than a pound or two fluctuation.

Haze, Go with the Lokar set up. Very dependable.

What am I not seeing?

I guess just being paranoid after spending $2k+ after the first one blew up on me :)

Just like most guys, I can't leave well enough alone, always tinkering with the idle, fuel mixture screws, etc. It's a piece of mind... if anything goes wrong like the first transmission, I might have a fighting chance to save it. Sorta like your oil pressure...unless you can monitor it, you won't know if you have a problem.

32 psi at idle seems very high. Have you had your valve body torn down or checked for a sticking valve? My idle pressure is somewhere around 5-10 if I remember correctly, and I have a Lentech valve body. My understanding is that you want your tv pressure to follow/mimic your throttle position. More throttle = more pressure. Are you carb'd or EFI? For my TV cable I used a Mustang type cable but had to modify it so it was longer. I did play with the adjustment a bit at first.....started with it tight and backed it off a click at a time until it shifted at the right time but didn't drop the tv pressure too low either.

I had a learning curve getting the AOD to work well so I installed a 0-100 psi gauge under the dash. It was meant to be temporary, but it's been there for about a year now. The max pressure mine ever sees is about 85 psi when I romp on it.

I would think with 32 at idle that yours would shift harsh/very firm....like firm enough to chirp tires at each shift. Before I went to the Lentech, mine shifted like that and I hated it. It was a stock vb with a Transgo shift kit. Going to the Lentech was the best thing I did for the trans. Like Bronco Italiano I have the pressure line coming thru the transfer case shifter area.

Do you have a trans temp gauge also? I recommend having one with the touchy-ness of AOD's to heat and improper tv pressure.

Okay. Seems fair. Just sayin' though.......

When it comes to gauge selection, I guess I'd look for 0-50#. Easier to read while on the move

It shifts firm, but not chirping tires or banging firm. The only occasional issue is slowing down from OD to 3rd , it will make the front end dive. The valve body was modified by the transmission shop, so I don't know remember exactly what they told me...getting old sucks. Oh...I have a Edelbrock carb with the AOD bracket kit. I do remember asking them to ensure I can hold first gear manually for downhill stuff.

I think I'll order the Lokar cable setup and bracket just to clean up the junkyard stuff and see if I can get my idle pressure down to something reasonable.

Still shopping for a digital gauge too. Seems to me getting the right sender to match the gauge is the only issue.
