Does anyone have a good source for green paint similar to what the Army uses to paint Humvees? I should be ready for paint soon and want to avoid a shiny paint job. I want the rig to look good though. Also, any suggestions on primer would be very helpful. I'm painting it myself, so I need all the help I can get.

Flat paint can sure be tricky ...If you can find some army paint get it ...
but most likely you wont find it so ..as I remember back when I mixed paint ....
We had a fatten compound that was put into the last coat of paint ...when It said last coat it mint don't recoat...I HAD sprayed a yellow chevy marroso vega....and was adding the flat black skunk stripes to it black rockers and black around the tail light under the truck ...well it seemed a little streaked to me so I furgured add another top coat ...IT looked like a complete wrinkle job ...cracked.. saged ....looked bad ...let it dry .....but sold it just couldnt start over...

My rig is never going to be a pretty show truck, I just need to get paint on it so I can drive it. The paint that was on it appeared to have been painted on with a paint brush. Someone even said they thought it was house paint. I've stripped the entire thing down to metal and should spray primer as soon as we tackle a couple of rust spots. I really like the OD green color, but I guess I will have to go with what I can find and afford. Like I said, I'm painting it myself, so I'm not expecting perfection. Any suggestions on primer?

1st SGT: I wanted the same look and wanted to do it myself - I have painted a truck before using a compressor and automotive paint, but felt that with touch up always being an issue why not go with a rattle can if I could get it on even and make it look good. Also felt that flat would blend better for touch up. I used Krylon Olive Green Green.

I think it turned out pretty good and was relatively inexpensive.

How funny. Your rig was the picture I had saved as an example of what I wanted. I couldn't remember where I found the picture though. With this thing down to bare metal, I will primer the crap out of it and give it a try. My rig is a rust bucket, so trying to make it pretty is way out of my league. When the weather cooperates and I have time, I'll finisht he job and shoot you some pictures of how it turned out.

Go to your local paint supply store. All of them around here keep some of it premixed on hand. Of course, i live in a heavily hunted area, but any paint house should be able to get you some OD green for your application. Local shop uses some Dupont whatchamacallit that will stick to anything- $25 a gallon. Ive used it to paint over galvanized with NO prep and after 5 years of being out in the weather it still looks good.

I love the look of plain ol' primer. My 70 Mustang fastback looked truly menacing in primered black. (plus, cops didn't notice it near as much as when it was yellow)
but something to remember when painting with primer, is that after a while it will retain moisture. so when I do mine, I think I'll use a Durabak (or some DIY bedliner) basecoat to get the metal sealed, and then prime on top of that.

Yeah, I plan to spray it and block sand it a few times. Then I will paint it. I have to attend a class on the 4th of April so they will let me use the base prep room and paint booth. Hopefully I will have it painted before the end of April. We'll see.

I also used the rattle can olive green camo stuff. Turned out nice, easy to touch up and inexpensive. Look in my links

If you are not sure about the paint, I have a few copies of "Army motors" from when I was in the Military Vehicles Preservation Ass'n. They have plenty of paint advertisments for people restoring their MV's. These people are extremely anal so the paint is dead on. I will see if I can locate a few issues and post back. As far as spraying it, nothing specail. I worked in a motor pool on GrandForks AFB for 5 months and saw a nice 75 Bronco with a camo scheme. The guy had no prblems spraying his.
