If I'm painting a base clear. After I prime it what should I do as far as sanding. I was told that whatever I do to finish off with at least 400 if not finner. Is this right?

400 will work if you are going to put alot of basecoat on, but I always finish sand with 600 before spraying the base/clear. Makes a cleaner paint job and you wont risk having sanding marks come through. there isn't really a need to go any finer than 600 though.

If you use a guide coat system, 400 grit is enough to take it of. And lay on at least 3 to 5 good coats of basecolor between flashes.

I always use 500 or 600 grit...Then spray the coats on wet, but not too wet to where it runs...Each base/clear system is different, read the instructions on mixing, and flash time...I spray base at about 45-47psi, and clear about 57-60psi, peel off all tape while still wet, and let dry 16 hours depending on the base/clear system, then wet sand with 2000 grit, and buff...

When you guys are sandung, are you using a DA sander or by hand. Seems like everytime I get hold of a DA, I get swirl marks and sanding marks all over it. Then when I paint, it looks terrible. What grit do you DA with? Do you finish your pre-paint sanding by hand? Should I hand sand after the DA? Sorry to go off the subject a bit.

Thanks

Blue71

For the final sanding before paint I always use 600 grit and wet sand with warm soapy water. Then rinse, blow off, wipe off with grease and wax remover, remask everything, blow off again!!, tack, and paint. I think the warm soapy water helps remove any chance of paint problems: fish eye, etc.

Make sure to use a soap that doesn' t have silicon in it. The warm soapy water not only cleans as you sand, it helps the sandpaper not build up sanding residue. In the body shop I worked in, we used Tide laundry soap (I am pretty sure it was Tide!) and it always worked well. make sure to wash, wash and wash again and then wipe it down with wax and grease remover at least 2 or 3 times after sanding. I would never use a DA for finish sanding. You have to really have a delicate touch to use a DA correctly and it is easy to fork stuff up with one. Hand sand with 600 and you should be good to go.

the smoother the surface, the better the paint flows on it. 600 is better, but a lot more labor intensive. Have a sanding party with some friends and some beers, then spray your color coat as mentioned above. Understand the principles of a spray gun and there will be no sanding and buffing after your color coat.....
