2 possibilities. One, the lock out plate got loose, broke, or fell out. Two, the coil spring that holds the end of the selector in the the lock out plate broke.

Could also be a broken weld on the shift tube or even a broken shift collar. Check wild horses site for disassembly instruction.

Or the tank that catches on the shift plate broke off.

Now that we are guessing, there is a way to actually know what is wrong. Take the steering wheel off and look around. You will need a steering wheel puller, just go to the local import tool dealer and get a universal puller. It has a yoke that looks like the center of a piece sign and a bunch of bolts to attach it to what you are trying to pull off. You don't want the one with jaws/hooks for this. Take the steering wheel off, look around, might have to reference some parts catalogs if it is really bad.

One more thought, do you have a shift indicator on the column? No? You may not have an automatic column. More than one automatic conversion has been done using the old 3-speed manual column and just hooking a shift rod to the transmission. Count the clicks shifter. You will need another column if you want to stay column shift.

Am I the only one who saw this and thought there was a new type of electronic shifter until I saw the PRND12 issue?
