Just curious and wondering what guys are paying for paint jobs where you live and what materials are being used. Labor rates seem to be quite a bit different depending on where you live. How much are you paying for minor bodywork and " nice " paint job ?

NYBronco just bought materials so I can paint his truck and he spent $760 and that didn't even cover all of the materials I used ( epoxy primer, sandable primer, etc ). ONE gallon of base coat was $265 and a gallon of clear with catalyst was $244, reducer was $70 for two gallons  . All together materials were over $1000 and I didn't waste anything. Just about everything was PPG products. Makes me kinda wish I owned a paint supply store :)

You did better than I did 2Bad. I had my truck done last summer. There was some pretty major body work required, and had I known then what I know now, I probably would have opted for a different bronco in my early days of looking.

Anyway, my bronco was in the shop for.....get ready.....2 1/2 months ! The guys I had doing the work for me make most of their money on insurance deals, so mine was set on the backburner most of the time. In early discussions, we had agreed that $2500 would cover it. $2500 later my truck was only half done :-[ :-[ . I'm a college student, so we're talking close to a full semester +books at that point.

My final bill ended up being $5200!!... let me wipe my tears....
The truck looks fantastic, (2 stage slate grey, molded rear fender flares, and fully lined interior) but next time I'm going to do it myself. I let the metal work scare me into letting somebody else do work that I could easily do now. I've got a great sprayer, and a nice welder I've picked up since, and I know I could have really saved a lot of money doing it myself. ....plus I like doing stuff myself just cuz it feels good.

Hopefully I can get my paws on a digital camera here in the next few weeks so I can finally get some pics up. 4 year project just now getting road worthy

I have around $800 in mine that includes paint , prep materials and paying a guy to spray it. I used real cheap paint (Kirker) and did all the prep work myself.

SHEMP walker paid about 3100 for his bronco done by the "Old School body men", he had moderate body work done and a dupont 2 stage paint in stock hot ginger metallic. It turned out gorgeous. Not a wave in any panel. BI

I don't know about materials but labor ranges from $42/hr Maaco on up to $78/hr. So it could get expensive.

2bad, are you just talking about just a sand and shoot paint job?
obviously the labor is a major cost in the factor too if there is any repair involved. if a truck where to be totally stripped you're talking more time. then how far down are you taking the truck apart?
take it ALL the way apart is a huge amount of time. to prep/service everything to go back together is quite time consuming.
materials are out of control on costs. you know how the better you go the more they costs for sure.

i'm doing a truck now where it's coming ALL the way apart. i'm sending the tub out to be chem dipped and that starts at 1200 for a bare tub, add doors, fenders.. is about 100+ a panel. ouch!
from there it will need etch primer, filler materials, spray polyester, sealer, primers, base coats, clears an all the additives for them. not a cheap process.can't forget the costs of seam sealers, tape, paper, spray suits, sandpaper...
oh ya then to spray the bottom and interior with bedliner...

the end result will be different than if i just went and had it shot at a shiney one color shop, but that is my choice for what i'm after. add in labor costs it's the price of a house in a 3rd world country.

how's your projerct coming along? you pleased? looks good from the pics
sorry to be long winded.

Buddy got an estimate from the local body man. Does top notch work. Recently did a concourse winning mach 1 where the guy spent $15k on body and paint alone.

Anyway, for a fullsize 79 f-150 with minimal bodywork, jams and doors would be around $4,000.

5-8K quoted around here and those are from people I know and have contact with. Just a damn good job...there are just a lot of variables in a question like that...regardless, it's a trade like any other where a guy has to make a buck...overhead is high, bla, bla...so I don't see the labor rates out of line. Maybe here and there but those guys aren't the ones that stick around...the middle road, biz savvy guy that shoots market value and add's the extra touch will prevail...ya' just gotta find that guy...

I do my own paint and body on mine, and quite honestly I don't have over $500.00 into each of them. I have always used the rust defender primer and Dupont centari enamal with gloss hardner. Takes about of gallon of paint(no doors on my rigs ;D You can do a Great Paint job for under $500.00 yourself ;D ask anyone who has seen mine. But for me to do the same on someone elses bronco would probably be $1500.00 Plus for labor and materials. Heres some pics of the broncos I painted. Both the green one and the blue one, and you can see in the second picture the drab blue one went to the copper in the 3rd picture.

About the equivalent of $350 US will get you a detailed paint job (sand down to bare metal interiors/exteriors/engine compartment/jambs etc etc etc ) plus the cost of your paint of choice here in Mexico. Can't beat that with a stick. And yes, i have seen the quality jobs previously done by these guys and they are top notch. Would rival any US high end shop work any day of the week.

-too bad my EB's are in MI....... :-X

On the cheap

I just had mine done at Maaco here in Denver. Paid $825 out the door. They had the truck a week. I would never take my Muscle cars there but for a truck that sees the trail often, you can't beat it. My body was pretty straight after I found some new front fenders and replaced the right rear quarter myself. Doors also are new. Do the little stuff yourself for sure like pulling trim and mirrors and other minor things. It really adds up to pay them $50-$70 an hour to do what you can. If yours is a trail truck then DON'T spend $3000-$5000, YOU WILL regret it later. If it's a street truck then shoot the moon.

I thought about Maaco also, but $800 sounds like alot even from them. What all did you have them do? I am doing the body work, I just need some primer and topcoat shot on.

Maaco

I had them do a little rust repair on my top and tailgate or it would have been closer to $500. I also used a better paint than their base cheapy stuff. It's not perfect but for my trail truck it looks really nice. It used to be 6 different colors. Now it's all Strawberry Metallic red. For my first paint job I am happy with it. Color is good and even, their body work turned out pretty nice. All in all I am happy with it. Good luck. :) :) :) :)
