Average rebuild cost on a 85 HO 302?

I ended up getting the 85 Mustang motor that I had previously posted about. I'm going to definitely need a refresh done on the motor or a rebuild. It has been sitting inside a shop for 2 years. The cylinder walls are smooth so I might just need a refresh done. It also needs a water pump, fuel pump, crank pulley, valve covers, dizzy, oil pan and pick up. I will be running a performer intake with a truck avenger carb. I do not know anything about motors so I will be paying someone to do this. Does anyone have a round about price as what I'm looking at on the refresh or rebuild?

Thanks for your time,
Brian

Ive got $3500 in mine with no dizzy carb or headers but its a just a LIL bit more than a rebuild. For a good rebuild in Jackson Id guess around $1500.

According to the photos you posted that is not a roller cam motor.
The previous post you starter indicated that it should be. I don't know what year they went to a roller cam.
Find someone in your area who does custom rebuilds. $1000 - $1500 should cover a stock rebuild.

Nope not an 85 GT 5 spd engine. It may be a CFI engine originally. Look at the casting number where the starter bolts, should be a E5??

The 4 barrel looks to be original ford. It looks like a mustang engine. My guess is that it is an ’84. I know the ’82 is a 2 barrel, but I can’t remember the ’83. I think that was a 2 barrel also, but I am not sure about that.

It can be easy to blur one year into another, especially a part that has been sitting for a long time. If you asked your source what happened to the ’84 mustang, he would tell you all about the ’84 he had. I only remember the year of the first car I owned because it was a year newer then my first bronco. If I forget what year my bronco was, I would never remember what year that old Honda was.

As for cost, I bought a cheap gasket, bearing and ring set at clearance for $49 a few years ago. But that was all el-cheapo parts. If all is good inside, replace the gaskets, valve seals, bearings, rings, timing chain (cam optional, but that HO/marine cam is a fairly good one for a stock cam). That should run about $300 for parts.

External stuff will probably add up faster. Waterpump, distributor (normal, non-roller cam), rebuild kit for the carb, fuel pump, etc.
