Hello,

I just finished sandblasting my 67 frame and she is ready for some paint. Just wondering what members have used before. Please provide pros & cons

I was thinking POR15 however some options and opinions would be great.

Thank you in advance.

Cheers

I did a 3 stage coverage on my sandblasted frame. A coat of chassis saver silver primer, then chassis saver satin black, then top coated with vht chassis paint.

I really like the POR 15. It goes on really nice with a paint brush and it flows into every crack and crevice like penetrating oil. I have been using it for over twenty years. Another nice thing about it is if you need to do a repair down the road it is easy to touch up. Just make sure to follow instructions as it does make a difference. Ken

POR means Paint Over Rust, it is not meant for clean bare metal and does not stick to it well, that is in the instructions.

Use an epoxy primer, then whatever durable paint you choose.

Epoxy Primer then a Satin Black Chassis Paint.

Touch ups are very easy if needed.

POR works awesome on bare metal as long as you prep the surface per the instructions. I have also been using 20 years with great results. UV rays will fade it though unless you use a top coat. That said, I had my frame powder coated and very happy with the result.

Is black the only ‘go to’ frame color? Anyone ever go with ‘Mississippi mud’ or other color? I found a local sherwin Williams with an abundance of a desert tan industrial urethane they want rid of.

That would be cool. Epoxy and then the urethane. Mine is PPG epoxy and then clearcoat over that. Just because the gun was full of clear and the frame was epoxied and sitting there defenseless.

The instructions tell you to use the cleaner/degreaser then the metal prep on bare metal. Works awesome.

I have done POR 15, Rust Bullet, and Epoxy prime then top coat.

I think sand blast, black epoxy primer, black satin chassis paint is the best of the 3. But all 3 options are good.

5 Star x-treme, Hot rod black DTM (direct to metal) paint. I just did my second frame with this and it is some really good paint. Because its DTM its a one step process. If you've gone to trouble to sandblast to bare clean metal then POR is not necessary and I think the 5 star looks very close to original, not to glossy, not to flat. and because it is a catalyzed paint, it is very durable.

Thank you to everyone who has responded. lots of good info and options to think about. I guess it boils down to preference and a big thing for me is the space i am working in.

I have a double garage and unfortunately i am not set up for any kind of spraying with a gun. I have used the POR15 on other small parts for my build and am quit happy with the results however i have nothing else to compare it to. From all the research i have done it seems like the epoxy primer and chassis paint is the way to go however i am leaning towards the POR15 just because i am already familiar with it and due to my current garage setup.
I spoke with the POR rep today and he said its good to go on bare metal. The metal prep they offer is basically to etch the metal which i have already done by way of sandblasting.

Thanks again for all the great info

Cheers

Dont forget to clean and treat the inside of the frame also! Before you finish the outside nice. About a yard of mud and insect nests were packed solid in mine.

Whatever you do dont skimp on the prep.

yes they have a product to treat the bare metal. i have also been using 20 years. but my frame was chemically dipped and then sent to nissan contractor for e-coat, then sprayed with 20 percent black tractor paint.

Wow! Great tip and nice job man, that is sweet. The only reason I used Rust Bullet instead of por15 is because por is uv sensitive. Not an issue if your painting over it.;D
