brake lite next to ignition switch...

Ok, remember that I am all thumbs when it comes to electricity. Primary problem began with starter not stopping, kept on cranking...had to disconnect positive lead on battery. Realized ignition would not go to ACC...so, I replaced the switch. Fun time! Same problem existed: went to Duffy's "Bible" and realized the starter solenoid is on inner fender, right side. Found this baby, lightly tapped it with my hammer, removed that red wire with soft black cover, then placed it back on the terminal. Went to turn key...damn thing started!

Starter stopped when I let key move to ON position. Felt really good and finally somewhat smart....until:

I noticed that little red lite on the right side of the ignition switch was "on" and red...turned the key to each position, the red brake lite would go off, until I took out the key. Started feeling really bad and super dumb!

Checked my wires under dash...seem ok. Note: Vehicle has 92 mustang 5.0 motor with Fuel Injection. Noticed wires running underneath super external air filter in front of mass senor: wondered if rubbing might have shorted a wire...

Ideas? Copy of 76 wiring diagram? All thumbs and bummed out...

Check Viperwolfs gallery pretty much all the wiring is the same on all years of EB's. You have another issue in that you have fuel injection and you never know what someone may have done with the wiring. Some guys like to hook that brake light up as a check engine light for EFI swaps.

Here is the stock brake imbalance circuit. The bulb is supposed to light when
1) the ignition is ON and there is an imbalance issue which grounds switch in the H-block
2) when the ignition switch is in the START position

If the wiring matches the diagram I would suspect the ignition switch of problems. If your wiring doesn't match then you're kind of on your own unfortunately.

Found a not connected wire1

Ok, guys, thanks for these two ideas.

I went under the dash, painfully due to advanced age I think, and found a red wire with what appears to be a green line that had no connecting end, located in the area of where the ignition switch is and that now lighted brake circular lite unit.

Question: Red wire (not big in dia. size) with green stripe goes to what and comes from where?

So thats what that light is for! Ah well, I used it's power source as a keyed power for the duraspark and the tach.

Brake imbalance is kind of obvious with the pedal feel so you don't really need a light to let you know that do you?

yeah its kinda obvious that you would notice that the pedal feel changed and the fact you are not stopping before the light came on. That light kinda signals the start of idiot lights in the automotive world.

The red w/greenstripe wire would be the orginal power wire with resistor going to the coil. Since your fuel injected it wasnt needed. Here's a link to some better diagrams there in the yellow chart at the bottom of the page. http://www.wsu.edu:8080/~i6735189/diagrams.htm

I have seen that and been wondering what it was. Just shows how much of an electrical guru I am.
