Bronco C4 trans parts

After sitting a day or two, starting my engine and then switching from park to a gear, the trans acts like it initially doesn't have fluid for a few seconds, then engages. Switching to another gear it hesitates a few seconds, then operates normally. It"s as if the fluid has leaked out of the gear chambers back in the pan, then when engaged fills the trans and is good for the day. Here's my question: The owner of the transmission shop I'm going to have pull the pan and test the valve body is unaware of the difference of an earlty Bronco trans. The owner of the shop has been rebuilding transmissions for at least forty years but is unaware of different components in a Bronco's trans. He recently rebuilt a C6 for a F350, has a good reputation but confused me when he asked if my Bronco had a C4 or C5. Which trans do I have and which components are unique to the Bronco built trans.? The trans was rebuilt by another shop and has probably less than 2000 miles. I paid to have it rebuilt but after having it rebuilt let it sit in my garage for two years while I worked on restoring the vehicle. Going back to the first shop isn't something I care to do. After installing the engine and trans. I attempted to hook up the auto trans shift linkage. Unfortunately the linkage coming out of the side of the trans was installed 180 degrees backwards and I had to have a mechanic drop the valve body and 180 the linkage. Sorry about the lengthy post. Hope someone can tell me what components in the Bronco trans. are unique. Thanks for your time, John B

its been a long time for me in there but the converter and flex plate the trans pan and the 1970 and newer pan fill truck case and bell housing the shift lever to the valve body. the forward clutch drum holds more clutches the truck valve body springs and the 1970 and newer valve body, truck planetary sets and the governor balance, the filter tube filter and bubble pan. the green stripe pressed in modulator and some models a duel vacuum modulator and the hardened input shaft. start from a truck model and you are much closer than starting with a car trans. you can tell by the bell housing to case fit-up no step and you need the shortened output shaft. to fit up to the transfer case adapter and spud shaft. the screw in dipstick tube and dipstick. you sure dont want to build one piece meal.

I took my 73 Bronco to a transmission shop to be checked out. The mechanic said the most vacuum he could find was 12off the intake manifold. He said he needs 16 to make the C4 trans shift right(not slamming). The trans mechanic thought my moderate cam might be a factor in the lack of vacuum and suggested asking the engine builder where the problem may be. Any thoughts? Thanks

check your timing and timing chain slack. Try setting your timing 12 Degrees advanced instead of 6 degrees advanced. check all your vacuum lines and the distributor vacuum can for vacuum leaks. make sure your carb gasket is good too. Got added vacuum brakes you have to check that too. a little leak here and there adds up. Dou you have the black plastic vacuum can on the firewall. my 1974 has one.

I took my Bronco to a friend's shop. He used starter fluid, spraying it around the intake manifold, the carb, inside valve covers ,... no increase in rpm's. He stuck a stick down #1 cylinder, clicked the starter to tdc - the timing mark was right on. Advanced the time from it's 12 degrees to 16 - no increase in vacuum(still 13 inches max). My friend said one thing it might possibly be is the cam might be off a spline. That could be because a line up dot was off or missed when assembled. I have to dig up the camshaft overlap spec to see how narrow it is and whether to pull the timing cover. Another friend mentioned using a vacuum can but I can't see it increasing vacuum if it's 13 inches at idle. A friend with a trans. shop had attempted to adjust the vacuum modulator to shift later but said he couldn't do anything until I got more vacuum. Any thoughts? Thanks, John B
