I had a 20' 7000lb trailer and it was just too flimsy. I want to haul a heavier (than Bronco) WW2 Dodge Command Car to distant shows. So I went a bit overboard. Now I have a 16' beaver tail 12K trailer, 82' between fenders which also have bars for drive over capability. Heavy, but tows really nice, 16" 8 lug wheels and brakes on both axles.

You can zoom in on the rear corners for the jacks. Trial tow. No lights, no license but there's why I live here right?? :)
Saw 2 cars and they were coming at me.

I got tongue wt, figured out tie down locations, figured out I needed 4" longer chains for the rear. The 2 pcs of decking on each side were ratchet strapped into the channel grooves.

Good 10 min test tow.

I wonder who decided that all tongues should be 50°? Makes for a really short tongue and gives you deck that you can't use without pushing the tongue weight too high.

For those that don't know
I towed 1500 miles without removing the stinger from the receiver.
After being at moab for 10 days, I connected the ball to the tongue at Moab, do my triple check of everything and we drive for 4 1/2 hrs & the stinger slides out of the receiver... I'd never touched it in 1600 miles thru WA, ID, MT, WY, CO & Utah...

Then it comes out in SLC traffic. I never take the stinger out of the motorhome after trips... kinda wondering if someone took it out at Moab or somehow it came off when towing... but when?
I'm going to guess the clip was somehow removed whether by a bush on the trail out or by a grumpy person at a gas stop. It's fears of dropping a pin that makes me check that it is still pinned and clipped as the very last check after the gas is pumped and I'm about to jump in the drives seat.

Some guys prefer the pins with the drilled hole rather than the groove. Then they can put something slightly larger than a TSA lock thru it. Although I suppose that might also work with the grooved pins if the lock shackle is the right set of dimensions.

I sometimes use a 5/8" X 5" G8 Bolt with a G8 Nylock and some heavy flat washers torqued* in place on the tow rigs. Get one with a shoulder that goes all the way thru the socket, use the washers to allow the nut to be tightened w/o bottoming out on the last thread.

*I use the "gootentite" torque method, meaning as tight as I can get it using wrenches - not an impact.

The 5/8" pin I use DOES have the hole, not the groove.

I do a walk around EVERY time we stop for fuel or whatever. Adamant about it.

I caught a "line" in a shackle on our trailer at the LAST stop north of SLC before continuing to Idaho. one trip coming home from Moab, 70 miles of nothing past this place but blowing dust warning signs... (seriously- the State has 3 miles of trees planted for a windbreak it's so bad). So I see this line and reached between the trailer tires and sure enough my fingernail caught on the crack. This was at a gas station. Happened to be a farm store 200 yrds down the street and that was a lucky but smart 45 minute fix 20 minutes before the store closed for 2 days!

Our motorhome can barely go into gas stations much less catch some brush to pull the spring clip- I understand what you're saying for sure- HOW could this have happened. My long explanation in the post after it happened a couple yrs back did mention how every time I slid the 5/8" pin in to one side it would always slide towards the DS so the spring clip was rubbing against the stinger. After 3 times of seeing this, I pulled the 5/8" pin from the stinger/receiver at a stop and slid it in from the OTHER side, pushed the spring clip thru and proceeded to stop in about 40 miles JUST to check it and sure enough, the 5/8" pin slid the same direction as it had every other time except this time it was up against the 40deg angle at the end of the 5/8" pin instead of up against the spring clip.
Next stop I bought a locking 5/8" pin so there couldn't be anymore accidents like this again... whatever the cause! I really can't believe someone would remove the spring clip (maybe so but :( dang) but do believe that whatever caused that 5/8" pin to ALWAYS slide to one direction caused it to wear or somehow catch on a safety chain??? and somehow come loose but we were soooooo freakin' lucky we didn't have a serious disaster. whew...

I mean the motorcyclist caught a cement chunk that the trailer ball was grooving into the concrete at 65 mph or from our hitch OR maybe the 5/8" pin into his chest and he dropped to his knees as he got off his bike and pulled over. Had a big dent in his gas tank also. This was all at 65mph in 8 lanes of traffic going in ONE direction.... HATE driving thru SLC... one year we saw a semi that had tipped over and crushed a person to death in their car... just blew the semi over. They closed the freeway just after we made it thru in our streamlined motor home! lol

I wrote a book didn't I??? lol

I've had several spring clips come loose enroute. We figured the safety chain is getting in the mix somehow.
Replaced with a spring over tractor clip in a through-hole style pin. I added a small cable tether so it stays with the pin as there are some folks that use the trailer that can't figure out they are a matched set.

All of the original pins used on the TrailBlazer Trailer that my friend Ruben rebuilt for my friend Rod are Ag type pins with leashed keepers like .94OR describes. Now that we have a local Tractor Supply maybe they'll be easier to get?

I've driven in all of the big cities on the Left Coast (except Boise, does Boise count as a big city?) and SLC is my least favorite.

Boise has grown immensely since I lived in that area. The multi lane roads (streets?) and the amount of traffic is unreal. Towing a trailer is not for the faint of heart, but they do respect the lug nut rule.

A little poking around finds that this type of retaining pin is called a "lynch pin"
I.E.:

Been out a few days…. The extended tongue on my 14’ is nice, it looks a little odd and I thought about reducing its length to a more normal ish 60”, which is normal for most equipment trailers around here, but it sure is nice to be able to jack knife it like a 5th wheel or Gooseneck.

For a mostly vehicle trailer I really like the open center in the rear, gives you working space and can use it like a set of car ramps for working underneath. Also makes tying down easier, don’t have to touch the trailer to tiedown if that makes sense.

That's what I use, thru the hole spring clip as I never trusted the grooved type spring clip.

The tractor and all the implements use nothing but what TS posted. BTW, don't ever let one of those snap on to your finger or thumb!! :(

In another of that guy's videos he showed Warn's got a Bluetooth winch control. 100' range. Currently only in use on their Axon line. I'll bet they expand it to the rest of the winch products eventually, and I expect that other winch mfg's will be hot on their heels if they're not already there.
