This may be a bad question to ask, but I was curious how broncos fair in car wrecks. I know that the frames of our steeds are pretty stout but what kind of damage can they do? Ive always wondered if I got in a wreck if I would be impailed on the steering column.

Hmmm if you are worried about the sterring column flaming river sells a colapseable lower shaft, and it you put a u-joint in place of the rag joint it would help too. In most causes a bronco can be driven home from a fender-bender and mior accident while all these new cars are taken away on a tow truck. The onlt saftey concern I have about my Bronco is the lap belt....I plan to switch to a 3 point harness or even go with a 5 point.

Yeah I figured a 4000+ pound hunk of metal would do some serious damage. I just see all those little weedeater exhaust civics runnin around and wonder if I would rather go through one or over one. Not injuring the driver of course.

I was rear-ended in mine in about 1990 or 91. This little Nissan Sentra, that still had the temporary plates in the back window, hit me while I was stopped at a stop sign. She must have hit me pretty hard, because she managed to push me about three or four bronco lenghts into the intersection. Her car looked about a foot shorter, and the hood was taco'd up. My receiver made a nice impression through her radiator. I walked back to see if she was okay, and somehow her face had hit the steering wheel, and she was bleeding from her mouth or nose, but was otherwise okay. I was late for school, so we exchanged info and I went on my merry way. The only damage to the Bronco was a slight bend in the stock rear bumper.

That was when I still had stock suspension and 30" tires. With taller suspension, bigger tires and the resulting higher center of gravity, I don't want to get into a high speed accident. The roll bars we put on these things really aren't designed for that.

Overall traffic mentality is definitely different in a bronco. When I drive my bronco and others drive stupid I always think, "...dont make me smash your little car up"

On damage, the most damage I have seen a bronco take is on rollover. Even with a top on the windshield seems to buckle quite easily. I would think that the higher you raise your center of gravity the more important a front cage would be. In April some wench ran into the driver front corner my jetta goin about 40mph and spun me 180* into a curb. The jetta is a 4000lb car and when I thought about the same accident in my bronco, sans top...I would have been upside down for sure.

I rolled a "70" about 8 or 9 years ago 3.5 times doing about 70 miles an hour on my way to Colorado (hit a patch of black ice) this is Arizona I had no idea what black ice even was ?:? anyway when I rolled the hard top was completely ripped off the truck all four tires flattened, ETC. and when I stopped rolling i was resting upside down on the roll bar, half in and half out of the truck. I dont remember any of the roll itself (I must have blacked out) If is wasnt for that roll bar I wouldnt be telling this story now , I spent 7 days in the hospital and about thirty days in a back brace with some really good drugs ;D , but I did survive..... That EB is toast, I tried to salvage it from the wrecking yard it was taken to, and when I talked to the owner he was totally amazed I lived through it , he said he hadnt seen a truck in that bad of condition that someone actually lived through so if I have anything to say is get at least a roll bar if not more it saved my A$$.... ;D

I got hit from the side about 10 years ago in my 76. He wasn't going very fast, and it broke my left rear flare, and the whole bronco went up on 2 wheels and then back down. I was scared shitless. Make sure you have a roll bar, and good seatbelts.

Four years ago on a two lane road I was traveling in the left lane at 35 mph, the right was almost at a stop. A 16 year old driver decided to switch to the left lane from the right without looking, only problem is I was driving by at the exact same time. I hit him just in front of the driver side door, crushing his fender into the engine compartment and spining his vehicle around. Crazy thing is, in my 73 stock height Bronco all I felt was a slight bump, no getting thrown into the steering wheel, and I just kept going straight down the lane (till I pulled it over)

Only damage I could find was a couple scratches on my stock steel bumper.

I have another, important story about seatbelts though. An acquaintance of mine from elementary school through high school, was messing around on some back logging roads in an early bronco of his a few years after our graduation. His bronco had a roll bar, however he was not wearing his seat belt. He ended up rolling his bronco, and in the process loosing his life when he fell out of his seat and was crushed by the roll bar meant to protect him.

GAWD nver let me experience a rollover!!
I have had my share of fender benders but the all time winner was the civic/bronco/toyota sandwich the old girl was in.

Scenerio:: stopped at stop sign, Toyota Tercel in front of me, Honda Accord decides to kiss the 8" Channel bumper out back. Shoves the Bronco into the Toyota real quickly. After the glass quits falling, I check the accident. Folded up Honda, severely crushed Toyota and Bronco in the center looking like nothing happened. Cop shows up takes pictures, asks if I am OK and starts paper work. after the smoke cleared, honda was a write off, toyota took several thousand to fix, and I was out 3 bucks for paint on the 2 bumpers. (front bumper is 5" channel with grill guard) I get 200 bucks from the insurance company and I am on my way.

By the way, they towed the cars, I drove home and the wife did not believe me when I said I was in an accident.

A few years back I was rearended in my '70 by a Ford Festiva. It was a Dominos driver who didn't see the red light or something. When the paramedics arrived, they didn't believe that mine was the other vehicle. The only damage you could see was a little red paint on my spare tire from the front of the car. That was stock suspension on 30s.

His car was totaled, the whole front end nearly in the passenger compartment. I must have gotten the best insurance adjuster ever. He counted every paint chip and broken reflector on the truck, all of which was there when I bought it. LOL I got $1700 and happily never fixed a thing. I'm actually surprised they didn't try to total my EB with that much money paid out.

Last summer I was driving through an intersection at about 30-35 and a driver going the opposite way didn't look and turn right in front of me. She was going about 25 at the time and I ended up slamming into her on the passenger front fender. I think she was driving a mitsu. galant and with my 35's I ended up going over her and the only part of the bronco that hit her was the tire. That was a bad thing because it ended up cracking the axle housing, bending radius arms, bent rim, popped tire, and bent steering. Her car was totaled and I didn't even have a dent in the body.

Several years ago I jumped a Toyota on the freeway. All the way over the top and about 30 - 40 feet down the road before landing. I would have probably got out with hardly any damage except I blew my driver front tire on their bumper. It tossed me back out onto the freeway from the shoulder and I got hit in the side. The tire blowing let the trunk move in under far enough it messed up my tie rods and steering box. Luckily no one in the other car was hurt.Wouldn't want to do it again but that was my opportunity to do up the front end (WAH, Moser axles, disc brakes, tie rod over, and Rockcrusher power steering). When dealt lemons make lemon aide..... ;D
