I have more faith in a full roll-cage and 5 point harness protecting me. The electronics are great but they are easily replaced with paying attention.

The Mercedez commercials advertising all their great "safety features" really are just telling people they don't need to pay attention to the road. But that is my opinion.

I think the original reason for airbags was that there was a large percentage of the population not wearing seatbelts so manufacturers were looking for more passive restraint devices, and if you remember there were several problems with them deploying too hard and breaking faces. Now (like Broncobowsher said) some are even being designed to be toned down electronicly to adjust to the weight that happens to be sitting in the seat (i.e. small people=less force), I'm sure to cut down on lawsuits. I would be pissed off if my seatbelt let me get close enough to be hit in the face by one.

""The Mercedez commercials advertising all their great "safety features" really are just telling people they don't need to pay attention to the road."" or that they are invincable and can be as insane as they want.

You are correct. airbags are part of a system. The whole system of parts bending and squishing in prescribed sequences with prescribed levels of energy absorbtion in the process. The mis matched body and frame combonation and the system is no longer a matched set. At that point you just have a random explosive device in your face and not a tuned safety feature. Completely possible that it will be severly more dangerous then not having one at all.

Im with Broncobowsher on this.....
