bronco with a tow bar?

Anyone out there have a bronco that has a tow bar attached to it? I want to get one, but how do you tow it without the wheels turning when you turn? Someone told me to tie the steering wheel, and another said not to worry about it, stating that the tires won't turn when making a turn. I have a hard time believing that if I was to make a sharp turn. Anyone have experience with this? AND is there a good tow bar to go with besides smittybuilt?

I have towed VW bugs and a Jeep with a tow bar. I always leave the steering unlocked and free. The wheels will track along with the tow vehicle.

After making sure of all connections, make sure the steering is centered and go.

I flat tow mine a lot. DO NOT tie the steering wheel or lock it. Leave it free so that it can turn. It will track straight behind the tow vehicle, including around corners. Also, you must remove the rear driveshaft or you'll fry the rear seal, and possibly the bearing, on the rear output shaft of the T-Case.

I made my own tow bar so can't help ya there.

It all depends on the caster.
Mine pulls like a dream.
On the other hand my brothers parts bronco with basicly stock/ small lift will not track at all in turns. We had to tie the steering wheel up, but loosely. Even still on sharp turns it will turn the opposite direction and drag.

Mine has a builtin towbar/winch. when it was stock it towed like a dream. I put a 2-1/2 lift and it screwed my camber up now hook a bungee to the wheel.

Hmmm, I would think that if the alignment, especially the caster, if off enough to make it not track while towing, it's probably not safe to drive. : Mine is lifted 4", with 36" Swamper SXs (bias ply), and it flat tows like a dream.

You can take the belt, feed it through the steering wheel, click it together, then tighten down. it works!

I've always towed the "ster" with the steering wheel loose , tracks like a dream . I built my own tow bar from 1/2 " X 2" stock , it's about 30" long .

I towed my Bronco with a tow bar once. I bought the tow bar from Pep Boys. It was a Y configuration so the top of the Y would fit whatever car was being towed. I left the steering wheel lose and the Bronco tracked beautifully. Unfortunately, the chrome bumber wasn't up to the strain. The end bent forward. So I had to remove the bumper and replace it with a piece of heavy gauge steel. I found a piece of square U shaped steel that had the exact width to fit over the frame holding the bumber. The bolts went through the steel just like the chrome bumer. I had holes drilled for the placement of the tow bar receivers. The bumper worked fine. But unfortunately, a good many miles into the trip the transfer case fried. I thought it would be fine if left out of gear with the wheels disengaged but such was not the case. If I ever have to tow the Bronco again it will be on a trailer.
