Edit: I was going to run my hardtop for winter but the %$@! bull at my folks farm trampled it... He's dead now.
With the onset of winter, and my doors finally being loaded and hung at my painters, I am going to need to get a soft top built. I did get a custom fastback top in the original purchase of my 68...
It was quite well built (boat guy built it), sealed well, had solid door captures, but will not fit over my new roll cage, and it used large aluminum frame work side panels that were ungainly and unsightly and would not store in the truck easily. With the fastback cage and swing out spare inside space is at a premium...
So the new plan is to sell that one (cheap, so watch the classifieds
), and build a new one with the following goals:
1) no bows - fit snug to the new rollcage, straps in a few places to keep it from ballooning
2) aluminum tube door captures that use a quick release clamp off the roll cage, body and windsheild frame and fold up for compact stowage
3) snaps to an aluminum riser, small aluminum rails along the bed and a tailgate cap (no drilling of body) - when top is removed the mounting hardware is inobtrusive and balcked out
4) 2 peice top - bikini front and zip on rear fastback section - one top for all weather, compact stowage, top and door captures folded up same size as small rolled up tent
5) a bonus would be to be able to swing the spare out without removing the front bikini portion - "V" cut/zipper
6) double bonus, while the fastback cage is sexy, with the spare inside there is not much room for stowage, day runs i'm ok, overnight trips I may elect to have the spare mount on the top of the cage as well so might slot the back half of the top accordingly
I have the material as my upholsterer built me a quick bikini to minimize my sunburns this summer. I am to build the softtop frame, my upholsterer will then sew accordingly.
Any tips or advice is appreciated.
