I have a 1976 pan fill c4 trans. With a 10.5 bolt pattern converter my question is can I use a converter with the larger bolt pattern in its place I am running a 1996 explorer 5.0

Yes. The correct 11 1/4” bolt circle converter will interchange. You can use the 96’ Explorer flex plate too, if you have it.

Is there an imbalance issue that needs to be considered? original motor is 28 oz-in and the Explorer 50?

Only from the flex plate forward. The torque converter is balanced.

He would already be running the 50 oz imbalance harmonic balancer and flex plate with the stock 5.0

It's actually an AOD/AODE flexplate that goes with the engine with the 50-oz weight, but it is compatible with lg. bolt circle c-4 torque converter.

Don't throw your 1996 engine out of balance with the early flywheel/flexplate
