... Im using a haynes transmission book and the picture showing exploded view of valve body shows a cutback valve (what ever that is) with a spring. Mine is either missing it or doesnt need it ?

I realize my thread is long and dated and I wonder if you continue thread until your finished ? in my case with repairs to tranny or do you start a new thread each time? thanks for the input

Oh yeah,
Post a pic of the valve. And keep this same thread until your problem gets solved.

cleaned valve body and that made a huge difference in the ease at which valves move. Before I finished I decided I would see if anyone has posted pics on relation to valves and springs to see if I screwed up. The search tool on this site is awesome. I am actually learning how to use a computer!!Anyhow, BroncoHowie did a great write up 11-17-07 with a list regarding valves. On # 9 there is advice to remove spring for transition valve. Could someone explain what this does and how it helps? Also ; # 13- cutback valve and advice to block valve with viton checkball. What does this do and where do you get viton checkball?Just thought I should consider these changes before final assembly of valve body. Thank you for help, hope everyone is having good Sunday. Wrenching and learning in Sacramento Ca.

I would need to write a 5-page essay to explain what actually takes place when you make these mods. The effect from both mods helps the trans to shift firmer. The cutback mod may not be needed except for high horsepower or racing. The transition valve, Ford actually built many stock valve bodies without this spring, and will also help during manual downshifts. The viton balls come in the transmission gasket sets, When you replace them new you use the left-over old ones to block the valve. If you dont want to buy a gasket and seal set, try a trans shop every good rebuilder keeps spares and probably has a drawer full of those balls in all different sizes.

Here's a link to the thread reference. http://classicbroncos.com/forums/showthread.php?t=110275

update- Since I have gone this far I decided to pull oil pump off( since I found that gasket material in screen) , and removed what I believe is planetary gear. I did not see anything that looked broke or damaged. In fact, everything looked new. As I posted previously tranny was recently re-built.
Have it all assembled , hopefull correctly and it is ready to install. My transfer case has a very mild leak ,sooooo I am going to open it up and take a look. At this point I figure what the hell!!!!Thanks for all ideas and I will post later on if tranny repairs worked or if tranny went to a pro to get fixed. One thing is for sure, I'll now no what the mechanic is talking about!!

It makes me sick to think I have been having tranny troubles for a year!let me give update; after last repairs I checked out everything while on jackstands . all gears seemed ok. Drove it and it barely moved. Took out trany and EVERY PART. Turn out my clutch pack was fried, needed new planetary gear, and new roller bearings.I was suprised when I opened up valve body to find crap in it, because it was just cleaned by me. In addition to rebuilding tranny I added remote filter with temp gauge (perm cool, summit racing), deep pan ,bt racing, derale remote fan. After a few test runs my temps have been below 150. Just around town. I hve discovered that I have a kickdown linkage problem. I may have always have this problem. I raised bronco with 2 inch lift. This probably screwed relatinship of linkage. I am pretty stoked That it evan moves!!!!!!! The day I got everything back together was a good f###$$$%^ day!!!
