CA smog engine in Colorado

Hey everyone I'm brand new to the Bronco world, I just bought a '71 with a '75 302 builder. The problem is the engine is from CA, so it has all the smog equipment on it. Does anyone know anything about the smog system Ford used? I live in Colorado and I don't need the smog stuff to license it. Does it affect performance, can I tear it off, and will the engine run with out it? Any input would be great,
Thanks,
Brian

Ebay-it. Someone out here in the People's Republic of California could probably use it to keep the Smog Gods happy! ;D

Colorado smog laws primarily effect vehicles from 1973 on, so if your VIN says 1971, you should alright - minimal requirements on vehicles older than 1973, like pcv valves. Also, get a classic vehicle plate - you only need one initial emissions test (none required on renewal) and plate renewal is every 5 years!

You may not need the smog stuff in Ft. Collins but if you ever go to get plates through Denver you will. I would not be in a big hurry to sell off all of it double check if you need it or not. if you don't box it up and toss the stuff.

Thanks for the input. I went down to the emissions testing center and asked them first hand, this is what they told me. There are two ways to approach it, first I can "replace" my engine with a '75 engine. In this case if an engine is "replaced" it must meet the standards of the newer part, ie '75 engine specs. Or you can "rebuild" any 302 block, the year does not matter all 302 blocks are considered the same. If the block is "rebuilt", it only has to be rebuilt to the standards for the vehicle year, ie '71 specs. This is for CO only, I'm not sure if it is the same for other states.
