Ever since I finished my 72 (complete frame off with all new everything) whenever I backed out of my driveway and turned to go into the street, I heard what I thought was the front axles or tires rubbing or clunking or hitting something. I have been under it 25 times. Retorqued the front bearings twice, made sure tires at full turn were not hitting control arms, checked clearance grind on knuckle not hitting caliper. Nothing fixed it. When jacked up, it did not make that noise when turning wheel.
Yesterday I was reading an old post (2019) where a guy was describing the same noise. @DirtDonk provided his input (as he always so graciously does), and he described how when he backed up his rig and turned into the street it also made a thumping sound. He discussed how he solved the issue by adding more limited slip lube to the rear pumpkin. Knowing I had already done that after initial fill, (my limited slip is also new) I went ahead and added another small bottle of limited slip juice. Well...sound went away. No more noise, no more clunk. Darn LS was just not slipping enough.
So, lesson to learn? Don't assume the noise is coming from the front end just because it happens when turning. Most important, find out what @DirtDonk says and give it a try first...it will likely save you a bunch of time.
