Compare Security Consoles - TBP v. Tuffy

I am looking for a center console for my Bronco. I am between the Tuffy Deluxe Stereo Console ($250) or the Tom's Bronco Parts Locking Security Console ($109). The price difference is pretty drastic, and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the TBP Console and whether the Tuffy one is worth the extra cost when the appear from pictures to be almost identical.

Thanks.

There are several threads comparing the two.....but, IMO you can't beat the quality of the tuffy. You get what you pay for!?!

There is no reason to compare them when considering security. Toms console will detere the "honest" theives. The tuffy console will completely lock all theives out, end of story.

A couple years ago, I was heading down to Fabulous fords in a friends Bronco. For some reason, the lock on his Tuffy console jammed (first and only time I've heard of this). Problem was, his Bronco was registered for Fab Fords and the vehicle pass was in his Tuffy console. I climed into the back of the Bronco while he drove, and with whatever hand tools were available, I worked for the better part of an hour to pry open one seam large enough to get my hand in there and retrieve the vehicle pass just as we pulled up to Fab Fords. Believe me, I was beating on the thing and it took a LOT of effort to get in there.

The jammed lock was a fluke, but the strength of theTuffy console sure sold me on it. I have a Tuffy console, and the Tuffy rear storage trunk.

I had a Tuffy in my Jeep.

I wanted a Tuffy but because of cost I went ahead and put the Tom's with the stereo option in mine! I LOVE IT!

IMHO I believe it is just as strong to deter a common walk-by the truck thief! AND if a thief really wants to get in either box they will!;)

...Save your money...you probably won't notice a difference and you will be very happy with the Tom's Product!;D .....unless you can afford the Tom's...I would save the cash ans spend it on something else!..like the new stereo you would put in the Stereo compartment! ;D

I had the backing nut on my tuffy lock backoff and could not open it. Same as above, took me 15 min to pull the rod out of the hinge on the back and get in it. If someone wants in bad enough they'll get in. I do love my Tuffy and now have a matching storage trunk in the back. At that price though, I'd be tempted to give the one from Tom's a shot! Been pleased with everything they've ever sent me.

I have seen the Smittybuilt (same as what Toms and a few other vendors offer)...its nowhere near as nice or sturdy as a Tuffy. If you shop it, you can get the Tuffy for ~$200 or less. I have 3 different Tuffy products and they are well worth the money spent...of course, I shopped them pretty hard and got them all either on sale or from a mass-buy.

One other thing to consider, unless you dont care about US jobs...All Tuffy products are designed and manufactured here in the US. The Smittybuilt is all China....just depends on whats more important to you...a quality product supporting US jobs or another Chinese-knock-off??

I have both. The Tuffy is better quality however there is a large difference in cost. I like them both. I think either one would be a good choice.

Well in all honesty I bought mine at 4 wheel parts, ordered it online and went to the store nearest me and picked it up at that 89.00 price...but I have bought about 95% of most other Bronco related stuff from Tom's!..I like them a lot!;D

So since they are both made of 16 gauge steel, what makes the tuffy harder to break into?

Not sure, but I love my Smittybuilt. It's the same as the one from Tom's and was less than $80 at 4Wheelparts.

I bought the Tom's console & love it. For a little over $100 you can't beat it. If someone want's in real bad they're getting in. I have the Tuffy glove box, bought for the roll bar clearance. It's built really well but the lock assembly is so overkill it takes up way too much room IMO.

Mine was a po install and I think It's the one from Toms. I thought it was a tuffy untill I was going to buy a new tuffy lock and they looked different on the webpage. It would have been cheaper to get a new lock with extra keys than it was to get two copies made. It does a good job of keeping things from walking off. I would buy this one again
