Why would we/us/you want the pinion to be high? I was just surfing the internet and Currie sells these for $5400. I am guessing I cold male my original Dana 44 look an work like brand new for less than $5400

A high pinion helps with front driveline angle as you add lift.

Just about every new 4x4 out there, including IFS, runs high pinion these days. High pinion was developed specifically for the front axle in a 4WD application. Low pinion is just a carry over rear axle design that works in the front, before they started designing specific front axle center sections.

A high pinion axle (or center section) generally doesn't work that well in a rear axle application. The gears are running on the wrong side of the tooth, oil circulation is backwards, etc. Not counting the aftermarket high pinion options.

High pinion front can also be accomplished by cutting down a full size dana 44 to eb width. If swapping to a high pinion front you have to watch driveshaft clearance on the oil pan. Especially if you have a 351.

If you call Currie they will build a low pinion as well...its just considered a custom order instead of a crate.

Just for information sake their lead times say 12 weeks on their crate axles...I ordered a 35 spline 9" rear end from them on October 17th...I got notification of shipment yesterday so almost dead on 30 days...and much faster than 12 weeks.

Waited 8 weeks for my Currie D44 HP. If you need a very strong front axle it's worth the money. Destroyed two Ford HP D44 in my race Bronco. If you're not racing or really beating on it there are much less expensive ways to go. They are pure parts porn though!

I just optioned on up to $7,357
That was nothing more than adding an ARB and brakes, not even upgraded brakes. All that and they don't even have upgraded knuckles.

Didn't realize they were using the new Jeep style center section (modern version of the gears). Not the old 70's design.

Just curious, can EB outer tubes be used with a D44 hp center section?

Yes sir they can. For the original design f-150 was similar and interchangeable. They can be put on a new design housing but it needs to be part of the design as the C that is welded to the housing needs to be compatible with the EB parts which the new Jeep parts are not. Hope that makes sense.

I think there have been a couple of different versions of Dana 44 axle tubes. I would not guarantee that all versions are interchangeable.

Although most would not bother with trying to change the tubes. Just get a late 70's Ford F150/Bronco full size and shorten the long side down to get the Bronco width.

My Currie D44 was $10k with everything. Only worth if you really need it. There are aftermarket center sections available if you want to build up a new one from scratch.

The answer is "it depends."

Factory early bronco d44 tubes are 2-3/4 OD, 5/16 wall.

Factory Dana 44 HP tubes are 2-3/4 OD, until 1977. Then some of them grow to 3 inch.

There's a bunch of d44 HP centers. Dynatrac has one, TeraFlex might still have one, Solid axle had one, Currie has one, and Dana has several. There's also all of the factory D44 HP centers in Fords and JK's.
