D20 Transfer Case Removal

I have pulled the engine, transmission and transfer case, now i need to pull the transfer case from the transmission. I was reading that i need to unbolt the transfer case just behind the transmission, but before i do i need to put the trans in first or all of the needle bearings will fall all over the place. So the question is, since i have the transmission linkage disconnected do any of you know what configuration would put the trans in first? I have the stock 3 speed manual, believe it's referred to as a top loader.

I don't remember what the reason was for putting the tranny in first was. But, it wasn't for keeping the 13 sisters in. there is a little hole on the top towards the back that you have to put a pin in and have it held there to keep them in place. I can't seem to find my manual to explain it better. I'm sure that someone on here can explain it better. You might be able to search on here or google for a schematic.

no need to mess with the trans. it is totally separate from what you want to do. if you are just removing the transfer case, unbolt the 6 bolts from the intermediate housing. there are 13 loose bearings that can fall out. if they do, you can pull the inspection cover off the D20 and find them all.

ubbolt the intermediate housing where it bolts to the transmission or where it bolts to the transfer case?

I like to unbolt it from the trans so I don't mess with the 13 pain in the buts
