I'd like to know if this is true about a lube issue using 2L. I use my 69 w/ T-shift while hunting and leave the hubs locked and put around in 2L until I need 4wd then shift into 4L. I'll stop using 2L if there is a potential to cause damage.
You have exactly the same parts spinning in 2L as you do in 2H. The only difference is the rear output shaft is spinning slower. I don't see a problem with it.

I also think the 2L position only meshes with half the width of the gear so it makes the teeth vulnerable under heavy throttle use. I use 2L for finesse maneuvers.
Not correct. The rear sliding gear is fully meshed when the rear is fully in the detent. If it wasn't it would pop out of gear immediately. With twin sticks you do this by putting the rear shifter in low and leave the front shifter in neutral. With a stock T style tcase the rear sliding gear has to fully engage a high or low detent before the front sliding gear can possibly move from neutral. This is the undocumented 2L position that can be felt in the shifter. You feel it because the rear detent is locking in place.

That being said if the OP cannot get the 2H shift rod fully engaged he will never get the front shift rod/fork to engage 4H.

My T shifter was so stiff I had to put a foot on the dash and pull with both hands to get it in 4 hi. I took the plugs out of the detent ball holes and put in a bolt with a pal nut. It allowed me to reduce the pressure on the detents and now it's a one handed pull. It took a few adjustments to get enough tension not to pop out of gear and still let it shift..

my understanding 2L it was not designed to be used so there is no detent to hold the shifter in gear for 2L

Thanks everyone! It was the floor interfering with the shifter due to the body lift; all fixed! Not sure this Bronco has been in 4H for years, if not decades…

do you know if this transfer case was rebuilt or taken apart. I had this problem and thankfully found it before I put my body back on. The mechanic who rebuilt my transfer case installed the shift arms backwards. They do go in and the pins all fit but the base of the shift arm runs into the housing keeping it from shifting into gear. I had to pull the transfer case and remove the shift arms and just flip them over. Once done it shifted across the entire range of gears. Couldn't see anywhere in the tread if yours had been out or not.

No idea if rebuilt, 3 PO, and the last PO didn’t ask questions of that PO, to my frustration as I like details, but it was in decent shape and raging good deal, so I didn’t worry about it. Sorry, wish I was more help, mine wasn’t backwards, all positions looked factory to me, only custom mod was after bolting on shifter they welded it as well.
