Dana 20 Speedometer Gear Replacement?

I have been having speedometer fluctuation problems since my rebuild. I believe I have it narrowed down to the speedometer gear and shims on the Dana 20 rear output shaft. As I understand it, if the shims are not applying sufficient pre-load pressure on the bearing, the speedometer gear will slip.

Now the question. Can I remove and replace the speedometer gear and shims without removing the entire rear housing assembly???

Thanks in advance for the help.

Well maybe I can get a response by asking a different question.
Can the rear bearing housing be taken off the transfer case without fear of losing the needle bearings or having the output driven gear fall off the shifting fork? What I would like to avoid is removing the Dana 20 from the vehicle.

What I am attempting to do is find the best method for replacing the speedometer gear and shim pack on the output shaft.

Thanks
