Im thinking I might try 39s for my next tires but I'm running a Dana 44 and 9". Can I get away with it for a while or should I wait tell I can do one tons?
Really don't want to build axles again but if I'm going to be throwing a lot of money at the Dana 44 maybe it will be worth it.

Depends on how hard you wheel, how much power you have and what your rig weighs. I've seen plenty of guys wheel 39's on various D44's under a variety of rigs with mixed results. The guys running small power (Toyotas) don't seem to have too many issues, the guys running big engines/rigs/lead feet don't last 20 minutes, everyone else falls somewhere in between. A friend of mine is running 42's under a 78/9 Bronco with an 8-lug D44 and he flogs it with only occasional axle breakage, but a lot less than I would've thought given how often his tires are not on the ground. My plans involve a well built HP D44 and 37's, but I wheel my rigs like I have to drive them home since I do.

Might get away with it for a little while if you aren't one of those that likes the skinny pedal.

X2

Lot larger have been run.

Another thing to consider if you run on the street, brakes. Not only is that a lot of leverage straining the axles, it is a lot of leverage straining the brakes.

But withen reason, it can be run.

I ran 39.5 boggers for 3 yrs. Broke one front u-joint pulling someone out. Also broke my sector shaft on stock box. Wheel it all the time. I just mounted 42 boggers on it. Going hi9 front and back with 35 spline axles soon

ASK SPAREPARTS about the D44 and 39" tires. He went through hubs.. I just went through my first set a couple of weeks ago with 37's. Gordon Bailie and Jim Hardy would go thorugh axle shafts and hubs left and right on their 44 and 37's. It all depends on how hard you wheel. if it were me, I would wait until I did the tons.

Google Jana 54, gusset the inner C's and run some RCV AXLES.

It works.

i've broke alot of parts with a built 44 and 37s. Lockouts and detroit lockers mainly. I installed drive flanges about a year ago and so far so good. I dont beat on my rig too hard but i def use it. when the lockout would break (everytime i went riding) it would take out alot of other stuff. Just my 2 cents.

I ran 38s on a D44 under my full-size rock crawler for years and I was hard on it. An automatic trans helps a lot as it takes some of the impact. A buddy of mine runs a CJ7 on Scout D44s and fat 38" TSLs and has grenaded one hub and one axleshaft in the last five or so years... Behind a 258 six cylinder...

I would get the tires...

I ran 39.5 boggers for a few years and played hard and alwase would brake short side front axel. But I machined the front axels so I could run full circle clips on the u joints that helped. A 9" with a locker and 31 spline rear axels helped to. Just my $.02

Full width with a nice truss and RCV's and wheeled smartly will survive through quite a bit. Everything is MUCH cheaper and more common as well - no hope in junkard running to find axle shafts for your D60 shit when you kill bearings or need a shaft, don't ever expect to find a lockout cover...

I went D60, am glad I did, but damn is everything expensive. It bites me every chance it can get - but it also takes a beating, but not really much with 37's...

If your wheeling style is just to hammer on it then get the tons, if you are technical and are not the type to use more throttle to bounce over stuff or stay on it under wheel hop, the half tons will take it.

RCV, zip locker, and Flanges. We have seen a lot of breakage caused by the percussion of a hub breaking. It will prob last the longest with these. The ultimate decider is your driving style. I know a guy who ran a d44 with 39's, he had no problems until he got stupid with it....on purpose.

I've broken so many things in the 8-lug HP44 under my '69 (39.5 IROKs) that I stopped counting...lots of axles and hubs mainly. The only things that have survived without breakage are the ring and pinion and the ARB. And the actual housing has never broken either, but I managed to completely destroy an outer knuckle.

A new set of RCV CV axles is sitting here to go in it...and I'm turning it over to Filly to wheel so perhaps it will last a bit longer before more breakage.%)

oh...and I blame the oversized engine and overweight rig for a lot of the carnage.

RCV's move the break point to the R&P - if you are not trashing the gears, you need stronger axles. Jana 54 is the solution there-

I'm counting on the presence of a gentler foot to cure most of it...the RCVs aside.;)
