OK this ain't a Bronco. It's the rear end of a buddy's 71' IH Scout. It looks like one of the ring gear bolts came out and bounced around, eventually getting smashed into the ring gear by the pinion gear. But we also found pieces of spider gears in there. Anyone want to venture a guess as to what happened?

Ouch..!

Backing out the driveway? :)

No, he was wheeling at Cleghorn. He drove it home like that and said he heard a slight vibration. When he got home he noticed the rear end was leaking and the cover was bent out from the inside. So he called me over........

Change the gear ratio ever? Ring gear bolts should not be reused and the carrier needs to be clean and dry when using locktite on the bolts during assembly.

We're pretty sure its the original 3.73 gears and open diff. Now he's gonna go with a locker though. So maybe my Bronco will get a break from pulling out his dang corn binder everytime we go wheeling!

my brother broke a NEW front dana60 Detroit just driving down the road before we even got to the trail.

what is it with scout's%)

Hrm - that sucks. Something doesn't sound right with that one, but I'm sure you guys will figure it out. I didn't want to deal with that, so I welded up both diffs and installed full hydro steering. That in combination with a twin stickt'd transfer case and a rear cutting break I'm happy as a clam ;D

I have seen a few factory sealed diffs loose ring gear bolts. Generally not a good thing for the gears inside. Can't say I have seen a D44 do it before. From what I heard there was no warning.

same thing happened to an old friend's '48 F-100 when he still had the factory dana 44 rear. he heard it and stopped before it did any real damage.
