What all are the advantages of the devilbiss dekups system? I know it is a disposable kup and has the measuring marks on the cup.

I use the 3M PPS which are basically the same thing but the advantages are...

1) as badmustang said, clean up is a breeze. (I use an old spray 9 bottle with lacquer thinner in it)

2) You can mix in the liner since it has a filter on it

3) You can hold it upside down and pull the trigger, when material starts to come out you can then literally spray upside down

4) no way for the paint to seep out the hole in the top of the cap like a regular spray gun onto a hood or other flat surface.

The only "negative" is the price for the adapter and the cups themselves but you don't need any mixing cups, just mix in the liner.

SATA has a cup system too but they are $$$$!

What would make it capable of spraying upside down when it is a gravity fed cup.

When you the put the liner in the cup and put it on the gun you hook it to the air line, hold it upside down and pull the trigger. When the gun starts spraying a consistent pattern without spitting all the air is removed. Same concept as a baby bottle.

I rarely use it like that but it is nice option when you need it. I did when I sprayed my cage and occasionally a rocker panel or underside of a pickup truck bed.

So the liners are a option to use in conjunction with the disposable cups, or you use a liner every time?

I prefer dekups. Been using them for years. Yes you can spray upside down with a liner system. The liners sucks down with the vacuum. 3m stuff works OK too. I like the way the dekups attach a little better. They also work better in the cold as they stay more flexible.

The liner goes into a hard non replaceable cup. Then put in a filter and the lid to the liner goes on. A hard plastic lid gets screwed onto the non replaceable cup. You then turn your gun upside down and put the gun on the cup.
A couple other tips for these liner type systems whether you are using 3M PPS, Dekups, or SATA.

When you are done spraying, disconnect the hose from the gun. You then have to pull the trigger on the gun while it's upside down to drain the paint back into the cup. If you don't it will spill onto the lid.

When you remove the cup from the gun crack open the lid to the cup. If there is any primer, sealer, paint, or clear on the threads it can be difficult to remove the lid later. The Dekups system is a bit better since it doesn't have threads like the PPS system does.

well gun clean up uses a fraction of the cleaner, you can shoot upside down, sideways, and inside out. Also mixing is super easy. You slide the card between the liner and the cup and pour into it then cap and shake and shoot, I don't mix with a stick or strain it anymore. Also with some of my primers I can pull the liner and cap it then shoot other stuff and save the primer for later that day. Its also nice to pull the liner and let the paint evaporate before tossing it. Before the cups we would dig a hole and dump it in the ground! Did I mention cleaning is a snap? Instead of a pint of cleaner I only use a small squirt now.

My gun and dekup system arrived today. It did not come with a measuring card, so i guess i need to order one, also did you buy the cleaner bottle or do you just have a liner with solvent in it that you attach after painting to clean with.

I use an old Spray Nine bottle with lacquer thinner in it for solvent base products (acetone for waterbourne). You can also use a Zep spray bottle which can be purchased at Home Depot. The seals on most spray bottles expand but not the Spray Nine and Zep bottles. You can certainly use a small bottle but I've found the stream from the Spray Nine bottle "blasts" away the paint/primer better.

The small barrel filter that fits in the lid opening is for solvent products. The other larger filter that goes on the lid is for waterbourne paint. Waterbourne paint is usually thicker so the surface area needs to be larger and less restrictive for the gun.

What do you have for a spray gun? I assume it's an HVLP? Do you have HVLP fittings and a 3/8" ID hose? You should have an HVLP coupler fitting on the output of the supply line. An HVLP male on the spray gun hose, another coupler on the end of the hose where you attach the gun and another male fitting on the gun itself. You will have much better results with the proper fittings, you need to move ALOT of air. You also need to set the trigger fully open and fan fully open for 95% of your spraying. HVLP fittings are sometimes called high flow.

i just got a plactic bottle from local paint shop. looks like a old school ketchup bottle but clear. And I only have the small filters that go in the gun. I bought a pack of like 25 but there easy to clean and 25 will last me a lifetime. Just clean the ones you have. To clean the gun I just unscrew the hard cup and squirt a little in the fitting where the filter goes and hold the trigger. Do that a few times and your done. I also take the gun apart and clean with some q-tips and then wipe it all down and reassemble. Then a tiny drop of lube around the o-ring areas. Careful when screwing the needle in so you don't damage it just like a carb needle.

I have a box of medium liners and a box of large liners and the matching cups, lids, and measuring cards. The medium ones are nice for small jobs, but the large ones are mostly used. I would never see the need for them small ones they sell, that's barely enough paint to shoot a model car%)

Allen recommended them high volumn fittings to me also so I picked up 2 sets at the local paint supply house also. I also got a large ID hose that I only use for painting to keep oil and water out of it. I screw a cheep throw away filter on the gun and another on the opposite end of the hose. We don't have anything else besides a cheepo pressure regulator and water separator in the garage and we also don't have but about 6 feet of piping from the compressor. Im not sold on the need for 50feet of pipe and the expensive water filters everybody preaches about.

Also my devilbiss gun has a regulator and guage right on the gun so I set the garage regulator at like 80 and the gun to.....im not real sure exactly but its higher than they recommend. maybe 50psi??? I write all my psi settings down and also both gun knob settings down and keep them by my painting supplies. My memory ant good enough to remember the settings on its own, and that way I don't waste paint figuring everything out each time.

i use all 3 sizes of liners.the small one is great for a fender, door, mirrors, and other smaller trim. i use the large ones the least. as far as the ratio cards to slide in the hard cup, i never use them as they dont have the ratios i use. i just slide the regular ratio stick between the hard cup and liner so you never have to clean it. the liner system cuts the clean up to almost nothing. i even mix the color formulas in them on the scale.

I have to say after painting a boat, my brothers f250 bumpers, and a trailer i am in love with this finishline 4. gun. The atomization is incredible compared to my cheapo HVLP i had and cleanup is a breeze. My brothers bumpers were metallic and the atomization really helped at spreading the metallic evenly.

A good paint job is 1/2 prep work, the other half is a good paint gun! With the Finishline you are already setup to spray waterbourne in the future.
