My rig had original exhaust when I bought it - or at least the muffler said "FORD" on it - it and the pipes looked ancient. No heat shields anywhere.

There is also a shield on the side of the gas tank where the exhaust pipe passes by it.

I would figure that would be the case. In general I have seen very few heat shields on pre-convertor vehicles of any sort (if anything it is spark plug boot shields or for starters). Once they started cooking exhaust in the convertor the exhaust temps were suddenly much higher then they were before. Then I start seeing heat shields on all sorts of vehicles.

I have a flowmaster heatshield on the flowmaster muffler that is on the Bronco. Even without cats I have had it hot. Hot enough to blue the stainless hose clamps holding the heatshield to the muffler. On other modern tow rigs (gas powered) I have blued countless chrome exhaust tips.
