The 289's had a ribbed air cleaner housing (on top), that I believe went away in 1969 with the advent of the 302 which I believe were smooth.

There is a "289" or "302" stamped on the heads of these engines, although in some cases it may be under the valve cover.

I don't know crap about the sixes.....

The only real difference between the 289 and 302 is the stroke ie. the crank. The heads had 289 or 302 cast in the heads usually on the bottom under the intake ports. Some 302s had it on top over the intake ports. The block had 289 or 302 cast in the lifter valley. The air cleaner was elongated in 1970 to make room for automatic chokes. These longer air cleaners were ribbed on top. 289s were sold in '67-'68 then 302s replaced them in '69. The 170 was offered from '66-'72 then the straight 6 got more bore and stroke to become a 200 offered from '73-'74. In '75 the 302 became the only engine.

Visible difference between 170 and 200 was the freeze plugs. 170 has 3, 200 has 5.

It's mostly a mater of the year of mfr. in terms of emission laws. The '68 289 was rated at 195 HP and the '69 302 was rated at 205 HP an additional 10 HP from 11 more cubic inches. On the other hand any of the 289s ran better than 302s built after '71 when emission standards caused Ford to go with retarded cam timing, leaner mixtures, less ignition timing advance, and parasitic devices like EGR, AIR injection, and catalytic converters.
