I have a '72 dana 44.
Are there any differences in axle stubs in the dana 44s?
Are there any differences in axle stubs in the dana 30 and 44?

Reason I ask - trying to get the seal kit that will fit my axle stub and they will not. It is the NAPA part number of BK1 or other parts houses may have it listed as SBK1. I talked to the NAPA guy and he gave me a '71 seal to try.

Picture of seal differences

almost all d-44 have the same seals about halfway through 71 ford switched from the d30 to the d44 some times the parts were intermixed so its possible you have one of these axles built with left over parts and may have to use earlier seal. What came off your axle shaft? does it look like either one of the seals you have now? the seal pictured on the right is for the d-30 I believe it presses into the rear of the spindle the one on the left is for the d-44 and intstalls on the stub shaft. I dont know of any other seal differance with the d-44 I've used seals from 79 F150's and they were the same as my 73 bronco's

The only thing on the stub (on one side even) was the brass thrust(?) washer. That is it. No other seal.

Will a dana 30 axle stub work on a dana 44?? Maybe that is what I have??

the d-30 stub will work on the 44 but it should also have the d-30 spindle for the seal to work so check your spindle I have a d-44 spindle the seal area measures 3 3/8" across and about 7/16" deep if you go to the lihks page you may find some pic's of d-44 spindles to see if they look like yours but really one of your seals should fit the spindle and the axle shaft of course its always possible that the PO broke a axle and swapped in just a shaft from a d-30 and left the seals out
as for the thrust washer some had brass while others had plastic I believe all replacements are now plastic type

I have done some searching and can't find what I am looking for. I know how to identify a dana 30 axle from a 44 but I need someway to identify the spindle from the 30 and the 44.

Can some post picture of dana 30 spindle and 44 spindle and maybe some measurement differences? How to tell the difference?

thanks
