Well if you get the van for $100 and pull the motor out and scrap the rest of the van for $200, you can't really argue with the price.

It won't make much power and it may be pretty worn out in a $100 van. I think those are still 2 piece rear main seal blocks. If you plan on re-building it it doesn't matter what the stock power was because new pistons, cam, and a different set of heads will fix that.

Best bet is a 94+ 5.8l. Roller cam, easy to find in good shape due to EFI.

The vans used a few different oil pans. There is a mid sump econoline pan that won't work. The rear sump should.
If it is a 4 barrel intake then that is actually a little desirable, it is one of the lowest profile 4 barrel intakes ever made for the 351W. Helps fit everything under a stock uncut hood. Not the biggest performer, but a good fitter.

'81 is a really lame year, 145 HP probably is about right. I think the 302 was down around 120 at that time. Making it up to about 140 around '84. But as mentioned that is pointless, change the cam to a moderate RV cam and no other changes and it will run so much stronger. And if you need a rebuild there are so many other things to wake it up. Usually a set of flat top pistons will still run fine on regular gas and that is a nice thing to add during a rebuild.

'81 is still the 2-piece rear main. Not the most desirable block around. But nothing terrible about it either. For the price it sounds like a good starting point.
